Tonight in the cozy setting of Bunatee, Tony Wright, formerly of fame, takes to the stage in the form of with a bit of added support behind him. VerseChorusVerse fits in perfectly to the twinkly, candlelit venue. Providing flawless, acoustic based numbers that make you tap along one minute, warm your soul the next and sometimes both at the same time. The surprise backing of double-bass and harp really filled out the sound and gave it that little something more. Great opener for the night.
Next up, a three-piece made up of two thirds Scotsman and a Northern Irish girl. These guys completely shock the place up. The energetic trio gave us a set full of New Wave - guitar bashing, lashings of synth and a solid foundation of rhythm. Stand out performance.
By the time our headliners of the night take their place on the floor-level stage of sorts, the room has started to fill out with scattered gig-goers. The Jane Bradfords guide us into their ten song set with a bit of a solemn number off their newly released second album. It isn’t long before they pick up pace and get things moving again with ‘Last Stop’, an instrumentally layered example of what these guys are made of.
There are various points throughout the set that gives glimpses of , and comparisons to seem obvious but relevant, with deep vocals and melodic guitar. It’s amazing how huge this band sound. It’s hard to believe there are only five of them up there at times. While the vocals, at points, are a little drowned out, it doesn’t take away from the fact these lads have something great here. They are solid and clearly fit around each other with ease, as seemingly the only hic up in the set is the loss of their guitarist, if only briefly. They come to a close with the mellow ‘NYC Lights’ which makes for an atmospheric end to the night’s line up.All in all, three stand out acts on the local scene.
