Alan from yes Cadets live at Vital festival

Ìý

For this week's TMO we go under the bonnet of one of the most interesting and progressive indie bands in Belfast. It's kind of hard to sum up the type of music they make - you're best just listening for yourself - starting with new single release 'Seconds in a Minute'. Spangly!

Over to Alan, vocalist and guitarist.....

The first record I bought with my own money was Urban Hymns by the Verve. It's still a great record, but to my pre-teen ears it sounded completely outlandish and otherworldly, like nothing I had heard before.

The most recent record I bought was The Haunted Man by Bat For Lashes. It's like Florence and the Machine for people who like music, not tone-deaf bellowing.

I was surrounded by good music from a very early age, but if I had to pick one musician that inspired me to start performing it would have to be Prince. As a teenager he was my guitar tutor, performance coach and sex-ed mentor all at the same time.

These days Yes Cadets always seem to get into the same music at the same time. Recently the fragile, stoner electro-rock of the Antlers Undersea EP has been blowing our collective minds, and we're all trying to find a way to be better than Alt-J at the moment too. That album is an incredible benchmark for quality.

My favorite NI band flits between Mojo Fury and Kowalski, depending on what mood I'm in. Both are brilliant, and I could happily share a stage with either of them every night of the week.

ÌýYes Cadets's have only ever attempted one cover version; Rhythm of the Night by Corona. It was always so much fun to play, and we definitely haven't done it for the last time.

As far as guilty pleasures go, my biggest would be Gerry Rafferty. It's maybe that he just reminds me of being a really young kid, but I could listen to him all day. And 'Get It Right Next Time' is a tune, man!
