He's got knives...and he knows how to use them

Posted from: Tabatinga
Today the new production team of Rob, Laura and Leti arrived in the border town of Tabatinga. It's an unusual place in that despite being tiny it has one half of the town in Brazil while the other half is in Columbia. They arrived pretty exhausted after three long plane rides and were greeted by a torrential thunderstorm and an electricity blackout in our hotel. It was fun to meet up and despite the jet lag it was great that they were all full of excitement for the adventure ahead.

The next morning we met up for the production meeting and safety chat we have before each shoot starts. Marco our fixer was also there and the more he's around the more I like him. As well as being an expert on Amazonian fish he is vastly experienced in the jungle, having served in combat with the Brazilian army, protecting local Indians from illegal logging companies who were killing them for their land. It's apparent that whatever problems we will come across will be a walk in the park to him. His most memorable line was when he announced that he will be carrying a large army knife and, if forced to, knows how to use it.

During this next film we will spend some time in a working logging community and as this can be a very dangerous place to film both Pete and I will each have a guide to watch our backs. Marco agrees he'll watch my back, which is great as he's definitely the sort of guy you want close - an intelligent jungle expert and as tough as nails. He also has some fantastically scary stories of anaconda attacks on men in the region we will be visiting (he's survived three attacks himself) and of giant catfish that have swallowed men whole.
