Titled And Emo-tional

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 12:34 UK time, Thursday, 11 January 2007

So, in case you've not been here for a while, yesterday I spoke to Patrick Stump, the lead singer out of Fall Out Boy. And I had two interviews ready for him. One was a big list of questions sent in by Fall Out Boy fans, and the other was an equally big list of potential Fall Out Boy song titles.

My book of Emo Song IdeasWhat I wanted Patrick to do was pass judgement on the collection of well-known sayings, quotes, and entirely made-up things, and maybe comment on what kind of Fall Out Boy song he could write, presented with an over-wordy, over-clever title like 'I'm A Little Teapot, Short And Stout' or 'Is That A Cornish Pasty Or A Corny Pastiche?'

Sadly, we ran out of time, cos the fan questions were so good. And actually, it's probably no bad thing. But I've still got the list of song titles, and I'm going to share them all with you now. Together with some scientific analysis and a handy points system.

I KNOW! It IS exciting, isn't it?

THE QUOTES THE VOTES
'We Have Nothing To Fear But Fear Itself'It's a bit triumphant for some bands, but you can't deny the power of a line like that. Might be more accurate if it mentioned non-waterproof eyeliner too.
Emo-Title Points: 7
'These Are Not The Droids You Are Looking For' OK there's geek value here, but does it speak of a turmoil or a burning inner rage? It does not. Denied!
Emo-Title Points: 3
'I Am The Only Gay In The Village'This is better, cos it's about being an outcast in a society which does not understand that you are an individual. But some people think 'gay' means 'stupid', so it's a bit like saying you're the village idiot. Which isn't all that brilliant, really.
Emo-Title Points: 4
'You Are The Weakest Link, Goodbye'A few years ago, this would've been a great title for a breakup song. But now it's so old it qualifies for the Anne Robinson facelift. "YrThWeeeekstLnk,BYE!", anyone?
Emo-Title Points: 1
'This Ain't Rock 'N' Roll, This Is Spermicide'It's a David Bowie quote, but he originally said genocide, which is a bit more dramatic, but lacks feeling. Plus changing the words to familiar quotes is VERYCLEVER, and making it about contraception and therefore sex is EVEN MORE VERYCLEVER.
Emo-Title Points: 8
'Can We Fix It? Yes We Can' The question is good, but the answer is wrong. 'Can We Fix It? Why, What's The Point?' would be better...
Emo-Title Points: 2
'Say It With Flowers'Useful specifically for all the bands Brandon out of the Killers has slagged off recently. Fall Out Boy should SO do a song called this. That would SHOW HIM!
Emo-Title Points: 8
'Westwood Is Gonna BANG In Your FACE' Much as I would LOVE to hear a song called this, it's just not going to happen, is it? *SOB*
Emo-Title Points: 3
'I'd Rather Have A Bottle In Front Of Me, Than A Frontal Lobotomy'Surely this is a song already? SURELY?
Emo-Title Points: A quintillion.
'On The First Day Of Christmas My True Love Gave Up On Me' Clever twist on a well-known song. Implies failure and internal distress. Also, scope for even worse things to happen on the other eleven days of Christmas.
Emo-Title Points: 8
'Whose Leg Do You Have To Hump To Get A Dry Martini Around Here?' Yeah, that's right. You're not just a dog, you're a dog alcoholic with a taste for James Bond's favourite cocktail. Panic! At The Disco is writing this one RIGHT NOW...
Emo-Title Points: 9
'That's Always Been A Favourite Song Of Mine, Not Any More'
Only really useful as a put-down song for an ex who had a karaoke fetish. And plus quoting Simon Cowell is about as clever as mould on a wall.
Emo-Title Points: 5
'He's Not The Messiah, He's A Very Naughty Boy'
Withering put-down for the lead singer of a rival band. Another one which should already exist.
Emo-Title Points: 8
'Go Ahead Punk, Make My Day' An attempt to pick a fight with Green Day, perhaps? Bit obvious though.
Emo-Title Points: 4
'All's Well That Ends Well'Well the sentiment is all wrong for starters. Trouble is, if you change the words, you get stuff like 'All's Well That Ends In Hell'. And that's a bit METAL, really.
Emo-Title Points: 2
'If Two's Company And Three's A Crowd, What's Four And Five?' Nine.
'Emoticons For Emo Tycoons'Geek points are scored for it being computery, mentioning emo, and having a pop at how people are getting rich off this youth craze and stuff. But it's too smart-arse, really.
Emo-Title Points: 6
'I Bet That You Look Good On The Dance Floor' Scores highly for being youthful, yearning and over-long for a song title. How much more emo can you get? On the other hand, this MAY have already been used...
Emo-Title Points: 9
'You Were Only Supposed To Blow The Bloody Doors Off'British emo, mate. Best in the world.
Emo-Title Points: 7
'Beans Beans Good For Your Heart, The More You Eat, The More You Fart' Er...Well it's LONG, I spose. And mentions the heart. Might be a go-er in a comedy emo (or 'comedemo') band.
Emo-Title Points: 3

Honestly, who really cares about something that Fall Out Boy hasn't said - most people don't even care about the things he has said.
Perhaps next week you could do a feature with a list of questions that you had ready for Jessica Simpson which weren't asked because you left them behind at the office. Or... what about a list of things that Matt Willis didn't actually eat, things that Johnny Borrell might have done, or words that Elton John may have forgotten... These 'features' could easily be written without leaving the office - you could even have a half day without telling the boss...

thanks for the backup george...glad to hear i'm not the only one who's astounded at the new ways the Ö÷²¥´óÐã finds of sp**king our money up the wall.

H - top of the pops didn't get too expensive to keep making it, the Ö÷²¥´óÐã just managed to destroy the brand over the course of a few years by messing around with the format with a confusing number of variations on the theme. In fact this very page is part of that devolution (DID U SEE WHAT I DID THERE???!!1!) as it was formerly the TOTP news page. Fittingly it carries on in the grand tradition of messy cross-platform/brand half-synergy championed by brand TOTP. It's the Radio 1 Chart Blog, but don't you for ONE SECOND get that confused with, or expect it to have anything to do with (or even just a link from) the Radio 1 Chart Show. That would be far too sensible for a bloated bureaucratic organisation struggling towards the future under the weight of all the money and free reign we give it.

Jade, Valeria, welcome to the happy world of British public service broadcasting!! You'll be pleased to know the Ö÷²¥´óÐã are asking the government to back a huge rise in the TV-tax which will no doubt considerably raise the bar for money-sp**king/programme making in the UK. Hallelujah!

Who would have thought a simple blog about, well, about nothing, but notionally about the event of having committed the act of asking the less famous one out of Fall Out Boy (well he should have shown us his willy, shouldn't he??) some questions, would have led to this?

    Have a good weekend everyone!

[TOTP NEWS PAGE?? It was a WEBSITE, and it was GREAT. Some people are so insensitive - Fraser]

    Hear hear Tom...

My main worry now is poor old Nick. Not sure what bit of the blog he found amusing - perhaps it was the bit about something being as clever as mould on wall... a true side splitter if ever I've heard one.

Anyway an educational afternoon it has been. We've found out a teeny bit about blogs, we've heard a few concerns about the unique way in which the Ö÷²¥´óÐã is funded, boosted Jessica Simpson's fanbase by one, been inundated with Fraser's witty asides, and found out what Fall Out Boy thinks about made up emo song-titles... no wait, scrap that last one..

And I thought this site was a waste of money.

[You're using that webcam to look at my witty sides right now, aren't you George? Admit it! - Fraser]

George George George... Lighten up. This is a lighthearted blog entry which hardly deserves all this criticism you've been throwing at it. Just take a look back on what you and Tom have been saying. You have been moaning and complaining about how this is a waste of the Ö÷²¥´óÐãs money in addition to not being amusing. First of all, I think it is up to the Ö÷²¥´óÐã to decide where to spend their money, and if this site has enough hits than clearly it is going to stay up. And as it's still here, I'm pretty sure that not everyone is as cynical as you and your new "internet friend" Tom.

Secondly, if you do not find this sort of content amusing, surely you could just, um, not read it? The humour on this website is one of its major attractions to websurfers. If you do not find it funny, then find a different website, don't bitch and moan about how it's not funny! Get over yourself, if you want proper interviews and news, go to the radio1 website. If you want amusing takes on the world of pop music, and fun interviews, come here. As you apparently don't have a sense of humour, I think you should probably stick with the former.

Thank you Kenny, I can't believe people are being so harsh when Fraser is actually an amazing writer. I constantly get a laugh on this blog thing from his comment and articles (among the other people who post here too) and I think it is terrible that people are throwing around insults.

There's quite a simple solution to all this. If you don't enjoy the content, don't read it! There are thousands of people out there who come to this website to enjoy the amusing and informative content. I'm sure two people isn't going to tip the boat.

Fraser, I just want to let you know that these two cynical b** (Tom and George) hardly represent all of the people who visit the website. Thank you for all your hard work, there are many of us who do actually appreciate it! I've been visiting the TOTP website and now this one for a very long time, and there is a good reason people such as myself come here everyday.
