Kate Nash - 'Foundations'

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 11:31 UK time, Saturday, 16 June 2007

Kate NashKate Nash's ex sounds like a right wally, being sick on her shoes, and embarrassing her in public, but to be honest, he doesn't sound nearly as pathetic as Miss Lily Allen's ex in 'Not Big'. Nor does Nash sing about their break-up in such an endearing, or joyously vicious way - where Lily brings Girl Power into the 21st Century, Kate's an out of tune whingebag.

Obviously, you've heard this all before, following countless reports on 'The New Lily Allen', featuring perfectly Topshop-clad starlets such as Miss Nash, Adele, and Laura Marling, but it's genuinely annoying how there's barely a polka dot-sized speck of originality in this song.

Examples? Well, the opening piano riff is perfectly charming, but it's not a patch on the tinkling start to Allen's 'Knock 'Em Out' [which was itself pinched from - Fraser], and some of the lyrics seem to be plagiarised off Lily, too:

"You said I must eat so many lemons,
'cause I am so bitter.
I said "I'd rather be with your friends mate
'cause they are much fitter."

seems to be the Nash equivalent to

"Yeah, you really must think you're great,
Let's see how you feel in a couple of weeks,
When I work my way through your mates."

And, to be honest, fitting words to rhythm isn't always Kate's best thing.

This might be all lovely and ramshackle, like a chipped floral-print teacup, but her mockney "I'm a lah-ver-ley girl next door, me" voice becomes so irritating after a while that you get the impression that, were you her boyf, you'd have called her something a bit worse than a bitter lemon...

Sure, they might have similar accents
But that doesnt mean Kate is copying her.. :S
    Anyways
I think this song is funny :)
    It's clever
And the fact that the rythm doesnt always fit the music gives it variety and stops it becoming repetative imho..
    But yeah

I'd love to see if she gets into as many bitch fights as Lily. Oooh...can you imagine it...Lily Allen's next war of words will probably be with Kate. I wonder how it'd go?? I think, reviewer, that it might do you well to listen more carefully to Kate Nash's lyrics, and make some real comparative judgments with Lily Allen, because the differences are quite striking when you notice them. The comparison you make is of the Kate Nash lyric:

"You said I must eat so many lemons,
    'cause I am so bitter.
I said "I'd rather be with your friends mate
    'cause they are much fitter."

    Compared to Lily Allen's

"Yeah, you really must think you're great,
Let's see how you feel in a couple of weeks,
When I work my way through your mates."

At first glance they seem similar, a girl teasing her boyfriend by comparing them to their friends. However, Lily Allen is aggressive in tone - she's spitefully saying that she is going to going and sleep with all of the bloke's friends just to anger him. This is Lily Allen's entire approach to lyrics and to life - she's deliberately a vicious, nasty, immature person because she knows that that is the person that her listeners secretly wish to be. People cheer her on because she's nasty.

Compare and contrast to Kate Nash: Nash's lyrics are an inner monologue, a 'stream-of-consciousness' where she presents her thoughts as if she were an immature woman in a broken relationship. The line "I'd rather be with your friends, mate, 'cause they are much fitter" isn't meant to be taken literally like Lily Allen's. It isn't spiteful, it isn't aggressive, it's just winding up her boyfriend because that's what they're relationship is like. In the context of the rest of the song, that line is a sad complaint that their relationship has driven her to be in the position where "It gives me thrills to wind you up." The whole song is about how awfully the two characters act around each other, how that's not the person she wants to be, but also how she can't bring herself to end the relationship either.

Kate Nash's lyrics are disarmingly clever when put in context, and hugely open to the sort of misinterpretation that you have achieved with this review. I think you should dig a little deeper. Kate Nash has a totally different approach to music and to lyrics than Lily Allen - not only is her writing more intelligent, relying less on 'shock tactics' to get her ideas across, but she also writes her own music and plays her own instruments, and, judging by what I saw of her performance at Glastonbury Festival, she has a wonderfully down-to-Earth 'humbled by success' attitude and a clever wit and humour about her.

    Her accent is annoying, though...

I love both Lily's and Kate's music, they have both produced original and enjoyable songs to listen to but I think apart from that and their accents there isn't much of a similarity between them.

Comparing the lyrics and saying they are similar because one mentions 'friends' and the other 'mates' is ridiculas. Can't artists use the same concepts anymore?

I'm sorry, your opinion is your own but it is obvious that people enjoy Kate's music. And if we were to say Kate was copying Lily, do you think Lily would really be friends with her?

    Think about it.

Personally I think Kate's music is fantastic and the simplicity of her songs is something that makes them so good.
