Hi,

Dave here with the first blog of the new season. As you will have no doubt heard on the wireless, I have at long last become a daddy. Jayne gave birth to our beautiful daughter Nicole on Thursday evening after 15 hours of labour, and she arrived in the world weighing a healthy 7 pounds 15 ounces. Here's a picture of them - Nicole is on the left:

Like many of you I thought they鈥檇 got the weight wrong, as I didn鈥檛 think there were as many as 15 ounces in a pound, but apparently there are in fact 16 ounces so the midwife and her weighing machine were correct.

24 hours before the arrival of our little one, my sister also gave birth to a little girl weighing exactly the same as Nicole, bizarrely. So the last few days have seen me become both an uncle and a father, but not in the same way that some of you had thought. The former situation is of course medically possible but tends to be frowned upon in most places outside of Alabama and parts of East Anglia.

Parenthood is so far as brilliant and as knackering as everybody had warned us, but we鈥檙e trying our best to fit into a routine as quickly as possible. Suffice to say my normal system of two alarm clocks at staggered settings around the 4.30/5am hour now seems like overkill, as I鈥檓 probably going to be already awake at that time, and at 3ish, and probably half 2 and somewhere around midnight as well.

The experience of labour was without doubt mentally and physically exhausting. Jayne too found it hard work, but I managed to pass away the long boring hours of 鈥榙owntime鈥 with a bag full of chocolate digestives, mini scotch eggs and an assortment of sandwiches to accompany the full DVD box set of 鈥楳y Name Is Earl鈥. If you ever need to occupy yourself for a whole afternoon during say labour or a long wait at the passport office, I鈥檇 recommend buying one of those little portable 7inch DVD players. 拢60 from Comet and for me certainly, an absolute must.

Life therefore is treating me very well and I must take this opportunity to thank my esteemed colleague Aled for his heartfelt video blog live from Mykonos to announce the birth of my daughter. I thought he and his new group of special young European men friends did a grand a job, so to all of them wherever they are salut, bienvenue, shalom et spirito di punto fellas!

I've been a massive fan of you and Chris since you did early early breakfast and my 5yr old son is now an avid listener.
