Post categories: ,Ìý

Lou | 15:00 UK time, Tuesday, 21 September 2010

Is it that time of year already? REALLY?!?Ìý(*Eyes widen and breath shortens*)

Surely it's not that momentous occasion where the red carpets are rolled out, theÌýsuper dooperÌýA-ListÌýsashay into the O2, the camera's click and the fashion police are on guard!!??? (*AND BREATHE!*)

Ìý

OH YES, PEOPLE! It's time. Oh how the year hasÌýflown!Ìý

These awards are voted for ENTIRELY by the viewers... so it's your chance to make your vote count.

Here are EastEnders' nominations to choose from:

Most Popular Serial Drama

EastEnders

Serial Drama Performance

Lindsey Coulson (Carol Jackson)

AfterÌýa 13-year-absence from Walford,ÌýCarol's returned as the quick-tempered, over-bearing mother to her brood.ÌýCarol's over-protective nature is sometimes the curse of her and Lindsey has a lot more emotional turbulance to be screened... COMING SOON!

Marc Elliott (Syed Masood)

Marc's seen Syed fall for Amira, but fall even deeper for Christian. On New Year's Day his character married Amira, but against all his family's values... his heart was tugged inÌýChristian's direction. The tearsÌýcould have flooded the Square whenÌýthe love triangle was revealed! Poor Syed had to endure the backlash and rejection from his family... all for true love.ÌýÌý

Don Gilet (Lucas Johnson)

Doesn't Don make a magnificentÌýmessed up man of the cloth? That description may not be written at the top of his character's profile, but the preacher has managed to spiral out of control over the last year. On top of killing his ex-wife Trina, he strangled Owen, kidnapped and pretended his wife, Denise, was dead and then held his family captive. Brilliant!

Steve McFadden (Phil Mitchell)

WOW! Steve McFadden has excelled once again with his dramatic performances as badboy Phil. Over the last year he's fallen off the wagon, seen Ben go to a young offenders institute, became hooked on drugs, set fire to the Vic and said goodbye to his "muvva".ÌýPhew. Steve isÌýa legend.

Diane Parish (Denise Johnson)

Poor Dee has been through the mill. Little did she know that her hubster, Lucas, was actually a murderer... until, of course,ÌýheÌýconfessed, kidnapped and banged herÌýup in a cellar. The preacher even made her thank him forÌýa plastic bag of suppliesÌýand asked why she was laying in the dark!? Erh... it's a cellar? I ask ya.ÌýDiane's had her work cut out.

Lacey Turner (Stacey Branning)

Lacey took home the gong at last year's ceremony for an unbelievable year of turmoil in Stacey's life. Yet again, the poor lamb has had to endure more heartache. She'sÌýwatched her hubby fall to his death (we're still welling up over Bradders), admitted to being Archie's killer (did I call her a poor lamb?!!), gave birth to Lily, found out her best friend dobbedÌýBradders intot he cops...ÌýAND sheÌýrevealed to Ryan that he's her daughter's father. Oh boy.

Most Popular Newcomer

Ricky Norwood (Fatboy)

"Hey baby girl." Oh, don'tcha just love Fatboy?! Since his arrival in E20, he's charmed his way around the Square. The wide boy may be a wheeler-dealer, but he's a loveable sweetheart with a pimped up ice cream van for wheels. Show him some love and .

Make your choicesÌýon the Ìý- you have until 11.59pm on Monday,Ìý11 October.ÌýA shortlist will be published in early January.

The 16th NTA ceremony takes place on 26 January 2011 at the 02.

Can i just point out that when it says 'Marc's seen Syed fall for Amira, but fall even deeper for Christian', this implies that Syed is bisexual, he's not, he loved Amira like a friend but loves Christian like a partner/lover.

Just want to say good luck eastenders and i hope you win! :)

What a speedy recovery Phil has made from his addictions.

I really think you missed the point of Syed's storyline, with the blurb above; he is gay, and did not 'fall for Amira'. It really confuses me that the SL was promoted as a love triangle...it wasn't at all.

    Good luck to all nominated.

  • Comment number 9.

    "2" "4" "6" "8" which soap do we appreciate "EASTENDERS" !!! "EASTENDERS"
    !!! WHOOOO HOOOO !!!

  • Comment number 10.

I'm really disappointed with the write up you've given Syed. Descriptions like this perpetuate misunderstandings about sexuality and gay relationships. Gay men cannot 'fall' for women in the way this summary suggests (ie. romantically) - if they could, particularly in Syed's case, there would be no 'issue' with having a relationship with the opposite sex to begin with.

Furthermore, to describe Syed's story arc as a 'love triangle' unfairly misrepresents his struggle and does a disservice to a wonderfully powerful storyline. He was a Muslin man battling his love for another man, whilst desperately trying to do what his family, faith and culture demanded of him. So to describe it as a 'love triangle' - without qualification - disrespects all that the storyline has stood for.

I trust the Ö÷²¥´óÐã/EE does understand its own storyline, so I'm baffled as to why it insists on promoting it unfairly and inaccurately (the facebook teams etc). If it is just a matter of careless phrasing then frankly it's an insult to the efforts of all involved - especially when you are promoting the actor and his work. They, and men in a similar position to Syed, deserve better.

  • Comment number 11.

I have to agree with a number of other people who have posted comments. To describe Syed's struggle to reconcile his sexuality with his culture and faith as a 'love triangle' in which he 'fell for' Amira is completely inaccurate and does a disservice to the writers and actors involved in this ground-breaking storyline.

  • Comment number 12.

I have already voted for Eastenders and Marc Elliot for his portrayal of syed massoood,

but I wanted to say that
Syed Massood is a gay muslim man and marc's brillant portrayal of his struggle to accept his sexuality, in the face of intolerance within his community and family should be celebrated.

Syed never fell for amiria, he could not, he is GAY and gay men do not fall in love with women. He fell in love with Christain, and felt only brotherly love for Amiria.

To suggest otherwise demeans the issues behind this story and the brillant way marc has represented the struggles of real life syed's out there.

This was not a love triangle, it is the story of a man's love of another man, and the pain inflicted on them by a society still unwilling to accept that one man can love another, without suggesting that said man, may have feelings for a women to make the story easier for others to accept.

  • Comment number 13.

    Hey there,

To everyone commenting on Syed's religion and relationship with Christian - you're absolutely right... he is gay and he's had a struggle to understand it himself. He did believe that he was in love with Amira, and then his feelings for Christian confused him. He really fell for Christian, so he realised that he needed to admit to his feelings.

At first he wasn't sure whether he was gay or not, but he had so much to deal with - his religion, his family, Amira and of course, Chrisian. It was a hard and difficult time - confusing.

Marc Elliott portrayed it brilliantly... and it sounds like you all agree :-)

  • Comment number 14.

bravo EASTENDERS,the high standard of your actors the ever changing dramas and joys of all the families, including the young ones, lucy to me is absolutely brilliant, for one so beautiful on the outside to be so devious on the inside.

we really are very lucky to have you come to our homes you certainly qualify for the big screen, top writers and perfect photography.

i can't praise you all high enough....thank you

  • Comment number 15.

I too have voted for Marc Elliott. In the words of Christian Clarke "Syed is Gay" not bisexual. This story was never about a love triangle but about a gay muslim man comming to terms with his sexuality while struggling to find his place in the world while still being able to be a good muslim and not lose the respect/ love of his family and community. Syed knew early on in the storyline that he was gay and had already come to terms with that before he even married Amira so that was never really an issue.

Has the person who wrote this actually watched the programme?! As others have said - Syed did not FALL for Amira - he was always gay but due to religious and family pressures marrying her was the option he took despite being in love with Christian. The fact that they are together now proves that. Please don't denigrate his feelings.

    'the love triangle'
If the writer of this blog doesn't understand what a love triangle is then the term should not be used. Syed loved Christian and Christian loved Syed - where are the three corners of that relationship?

I have been a fan of Eastenders for years and years. The Chryed storyline has me hooked like never before. It won't surprise you to learn, that I voted for the lovely Marc Elliot.
I agree with many of the previous coments. I understand that the avarage viewer doesn't pay the attention to the storyline that us fans do. Also, the Ö÷²¥´óÐã itself has promoted the Chryed storyline as a lovetriangle. Please trust me when I say this: IT IS NOT, NEVER WAS AND NEVER WILL BE a love triangle. How come we Chryed fans are so sure about this? trust me, we've done the research ;-)
Syed was always gay, long before he met Christian or Amira. Syed also KNEW he was gay. Syed actually admitted to having sex with 4 different men before Christian and before Amira. He had NOT slept with any women. Does this sound like a man who thinks he is straight/bi-sexual to you? Or how about the time het said about sex with Amira: "The thought of having sex with her makes me physically ill"? Me thinks not.
So why did he get involved and eventually marry Amira? Because he thought he had to pretend to be straight. Because of his faith, his family, his community. I repeat: pretend. He was never in love with Amira. Syed doesn't feel that way towards women. He liked her, and loved her like a sister, yes. But to be a lovetriangle, he would have to be in love with both Christian and Amira. And he never was. It was ALWAYS Christian.
Hope this clears things up! And thank you to all others who commented.

I will be voting for the wonderful Marc Elliott who has given outstanding performances as Syed Masood. However, I'd like to say that it is not really accurate or fair to describe him as having 'fallen' for Amira - he knew he was gay from the very beginning (4 one night stands, and the extreme difficulty he had in consumating the marriage prove this). His struggle was between the expectations of his faith and culture and his true sexual nature - and the exploration of how sham marriages occur for men in this kind of situation. Well done to Eastenders for running the story, one of the best they have ever done. My vote goes to Marc! I'd love to have seen the whole storyline get an award as the performances by John Partridge, Nina Wadia and Nitin Ganantra and Himesh Patel have all been amazing too, both before and after the reveal.

  • Comment number 24.

I love how everyone has corrected what has been said about Syed love it lol Chryed rock!!! Hannah xx

  • Comment number 25.

"He did believe that he was in love with Amira"

As many of said, he really didn't believe he was in love with her. He was in huge denial and *wanted* to love her. That was all. Saying it doesn’t make it true.

Descriptions like this "…his feelings for Christian confused him. He really fell for Christian, so he realised that he needed to admit to his feelings." and this "Marc's seen Syed fall for Amira, but fall even deeper for Christian." misrepresent that s/l and what Syed felt. They suggest that what Syed felt for Christian was a stronger version of what he felt for Amira which is impossible. He was gay; the love he felt for Christian was a passionate, soul mate type love. He could never love Amira in this romantic/physical way. This was the problem, and the root of their marital problems and Syed’s struggle (which Marc Elliott portrayed brilliantly).

I don't think gay men fall for women...I have to point out that this kind of subtle talk fuels the still very widespread homophobic ignorance that we have to put up with.

    EE to win!

  • Comment number 28.

what has been written about syed's character is part of a long string of comments about this 'love triangle'

unknowingly albeit still evoking the homophobic idea that gay men fall for women, devaluing what being gay is.

this should be acknowledged as part of a very big problem in society, though i understand it perhaps wasn't meant to be taken as so offensive.

  • Comment number 29.

I have voted for Marc Elliott because he has given some stunning performances as Syed Masood.

Syed, Amira and Christian isn't a love triangle. Syed didn't love Amira, he knew he was gay but didn't want to admit that he was because he didn't want to face the consequences. Once, he realised that he did have feelings for Christian; he knew that he couldn't change them; he was in love with him. Amira was someone who he thought he could love, someone he could try and be with but couldn't.

He got married to Amira because of Zainab, Syed wouldn’t have entered in a sham marriage if it wasn't for Zainab, and she enforced him into marrying Amira. He knew the consequences that would be enforced on to his family, getting disowned from his community, isolated from his family. He was ready to deal with them but wasn't strong enough and didn't want to fail his mother.

He tried to live a happy life with Amira but couldn't. He didn't want to consummate his marriage. He knew that being with Amira was living a life of lies, a life of unhappiness, and a life where he couldn't be happy.
I thought, Marc has done some outstanding scenes, during the reveal, trying to commit suicide, de gaying himself. 2 of my favourite scenes, has to be when he broke down in front of Masood and Zainab. Where he tells his parents that he has tried to face his feelings but couldn’t stop falling in love with a man, Christian, he tried to repress the feelings but couldn’t stop them any longer. Another favourite scene of mine has to be when Syed is talking to Allan, how he has to try and help him get rid of these feelings, how he tried them on Christian but it doesn’t work, how he needs help, he begs him to help him. These 2 scenes have shown the outstanding performance of Marc Elliott. Where there have been many other scenes where he has done some outstanding performances.
Christian, Syed and Amira isn't a love triangle. It’s a storyline about Syed struggling with his sexuality, about him admitting to his family that he is gay, the consequences that come with his actions, the isolation from his family and community.

I have so much more to say but I don't want to bore you any longer.

  • Comment number 30.

I voted for Marc Elliott , I have loved his performance as Syed especially after the reveal, it was very moving. BTW the Masoods need to be in show , getting fed up with all these blackholes.

    Inside_lou: I'm afraid you'll find that you're mistaken.

"At first he wasn't sure whether he was gay or not" is an incorrect statement to make. Syed KNEW he was gay, the REAL issue was whether or not his faith and sexuality could co-exist. It's always been clear that the only reason Syed "came out" was due to the fact that he fell in love with another (gorgeous) man, Christian Clarke.
13th July 2010 when Christian and Syed had the fight in Masala Queen (where Zainab's precious painting got destroyed), Chryed had a heart-to-heart while sitting on the kitchen floor. Syed admitted that he'd slept with 4 men prior to Christian so I think that in itself shows where Syed stands on that. It was ABSOLUTELY NOT a case of Syed sleeping with Christian and then dithering on his sexuality. It's all based around Islam and their views on homosexuality and on Syed falling in love with Christian. So, like I said, I believe your comment to be incorrect.

However, I will agree with you on the fact that it was a hard, difficult and confusing time for not only Syed but for Christian as well. After all, falling in love is a new experience for him.

Marc Elliott is a FANTASTIC actor and I honestly, really, REALLY want him to win. He TRULY deserves it :D Glad we agree on that much ;)

  • Comment number 34.

Sorry Insider_Lou, but I have to totally disagree.
'He did believe that he was in love with Amira'
He didn't believe he was in love with Amira, he TOLD himself he loved her. Those are two totally different things.

'At first he wasn't sure whether he was gay or not'
He was sure. He admitted to Christian that he'd had 4 one night stands. He knew he was gay BEFORE he met Christian, it wasn't sleeping and falling in love with Christian that made him realise he was gay. He couldn't admit he was gay because of his religion and its views on homosexuality and then of course his family and community. If the religious and cultural aspect was removed, Syed would have been with Christian from the moment he knew he loved him. Amira wasn't a factor because Syed did not fall for her. He's gay and he knew that.

Glad we agree about Marc Elliott being an amazing actor. :) Hope this didn't sound confrontational, I just wanted to correct a few points because saying things like Syed fell for Amira just perpetuates the ignorance about homosexuality being a 'choice'.

Stacey (Lacey) is just such a brilliant actress. She deserves to win. However, nice to see Alfie back but he hasn't proved himself yet! I used to love the light-hearted story lines between him and Kat. Could do with a bit more of that instead of all the aggro.

  • Comment number 43.

As EastEnders is the only soap I watch I usually vote but I`ve been disappointed with it recently. Really unhappy that Sam/Ricky/Bianca/Janine/Kat/Alfie have been brought back. Really can`t stand the new Lauren, bring back Maddie. Phil`s miraculous recovery was totally unbelievable.
As for all the posts re Christian`s sexuality I refer to Stephen Fry`s interview last week. He was asked if he ever fancied women, he said yes. He said he`s 90% gay.
I probably will vote despite my reservations about EE going downhill recently.
BTW sort out the weekly quiz, this week the answer to question 10 had nothing to do with the question.
