It has been an interesting few weeks for us, touring here is the US. For me - every city and show is an adventure as it is all shiny and new (this is my first ever proper Stateside tour). An interesting time too to be touring the US with the forthcoming election looming.
We went for a meal last night in a legendary bar in Bloomington where Barack Obama visited just a few days ago. I spend so much time speaking to audiences after the shows, and I am surprised to be quizzed every night by American audiences on OUR perception of the US election, and the American people, as Europeans. We continue to follow it all with interest.
We are now moving into the 'Fall', and I know when we return to Scotland next week after the tour it will feel like a whole new season. Even since the start of this trip here in the US, the leaves have started to change their colour, you can feel the drop in temperature outdoors, the sandals are firmly back in the case and I am on the look out for some nice winter boots. Macy's anyone?
I have kept a diary for the first time on this tour, both written and on video, so we hope to edit it down and put some highlights up online soon. It's a great thing to get your thoughts and experiences recorded in some way, and to document all the places we are so fortunate to visit. Your recent show at Joe's Pub in New York was simply superb, managing to be both warm and intimate (the 100-odd-seat venue helped) and thrillingly intense. You told a great New York story, too, of how your taxi driver drove off before you and your fiddler had finished taking your instruments out of the trunk -- er, the boot to you Brits -- and you had to chase him to the traffic light in your high heels to retrieve them!
UK folk musicians have been scarcer in the US since 9/11, due to visa difficulties. That made this fine show all the more welcome. -And the prestigious Joe's is now seemingly on a UK-folk roll: The week after this show brought Rachel Unthank, and next week we get John Martyn for his first New York date in a decade!
