Back from Preston, back on air

Huw Stephens Huw Stephens | 18:29 UK time, Wednesday, 23 May 2007

I went up on Friday to Preston to take part in a
Ö÷²¥´óÐã Blast thing in city centre, and then went to the Fringe gigs. The highlight
for me was Y'r Impossible who played a storming set at 53 Degrees, and who'll be
on the show on Wednesdays. I saw Whiskeycats play at the cleverly named and brilliant pub the
Mad Ferret, and met up with local promoter John Winstanley. The Fringe gigs are
a vital part of these Radio 1 weekends. I remember when it happened in Cardiff -
it was one of the most exciting things ever to happen to the South Wales music
scene. Wish I could have been there on Wednesday and Thursday night too to see
the bands.
Over the weekend I was hosting the In New Music we Trust Stage. The line-up was
incredibly strong. Here are some of my highlights -

The Pigeon Detectives opening it all up to a packed tent of new and old fans.
Debut album on the ace Leeds Dance to the Radio label is out next Monday.

Tim Westwood djing at midday on Saturday and not only playing the most banging'
hip hop but comeing out with some hilarious quotes. 'Put your F'ing F fingers in
the air' being a highlight. And dancing to Annie Mac's brilliant set too^_^

Dizzee Rascal sounding incredible to a rammed tent with tracks from his first
albums and a selection of new ones. Taking grime to the masses without selling
out a single inch.

Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. Two years ago playing an acoustic stage in Manchester.
Now at Radio 1's Big Weekend with everyone in awe. Brilliant.

Gossip were superb, and Maximo Park, Klaxons, CSS, LCD Soundsystem. What a
brilliant line-up!

Tonight we've got get Cape live tracks from Preston - and more unsigned Preston bands like Redwings, Whiskeycats, more Y'r Impossible and loads more ace new tunes to play you.
see you at midnight^_^
