Photos in a Haystack

I've been spending some time looking at photos tagged with Manchester on flickr. Lot's of time - there are of them and that doesn't even take into account photos that have been tagged with the name of one of the nine boroughs.
So how does Manchester compare to rival cities? Liverpool has and Birmingham, always the source of much lively debate on the 主播大秀 Manchester message board, has just photos.
What does it mean? Probably not a whole lot other than that there are loads of people taking snaps of Manchester and the surrounding area. So many, in fact, that we're faced with a rather large haystack and need some help sifting through it.

Have you thought about setting up a 鈥溨鞑ゴ笮 Manchester Blog鈥 flickr group? It might be a good way of not only spreading the word about the project but also a place to collect together a nice pool of Manchester photo鈥檚, all still using the bbcmanchesterblog tag of course. As the project progresses you could even run photo projects, tagging projects, theme comps etc through the group, with the best of the entries up on or linked to from the blog.
Other flickr groups linked to external websites do this sort of thing to great effect and in my experience flickr members love getting involved in things like that as it gives photographers a new slant on subjects and often produces some great results as well as generating plenty of interest. I don鈥檛 think it would take an awful lot of administration either, so wouldn鈥檛 be awfully time consuming or detract from the main blog.

All good ideas Jane, and something we're certainly going to consider in future.
The 主播大秀 has used flickr pools a number of times in the past, including this one for The One Show. There's a bit of red tape to get through at our end before we are able to do it though. Fingers crossed and thanks for the feedback.

I'm guessing you've seen the existing Manchester Flickr pool. Don't mulitple Flickr pools defeat the object. Chorlton has two, which is rather silly.

Multiple flickr groups for the same subject can be a bit silly but in this instance I think it would depend on the objective of the group. If the blog only wanted to find Manchester photo's then it probably would be best served by using the groups already out there but if there was going to be projects, challenges or anything like that then I think a new, dedicated group would be a good idea when the time came. Just my opinion though.

Good point Stephen. One reason we *might* want to set up a specific group pool for this blog would be to help us distinguish between photos of Manchester (and the boroughs) from photos of the same subject from people who are happy for them to appear here.
Have a look at The One Show group pool and you'll see that there are some terms and conditions on the group page that people see before they join and start contributing. That said of terms and conditions basically say that by posting a photo to the group pool, you're giving the 主播大秀 permission to post it up on a 主播大秀 website and also entering the photo into a competition. We may or may not do something similiar here but it's a quick and easy way for us to know what we can and can't, should and shouldn't use.
We mentioned Jane's photos a couple times and would have asked her to use one but didn't have time so, instead of using it without permission, simply didn't use it. With a group pool, and permissions already in place, we could use photos and - of course - attribute and link back to the flickr stream of origin or whatever was agreed in advance (And in the T's & C's).
We wouldn't want to just start yet another, indistinguishable Manchester group pool though. That, as you point out, would be a bit confusing. Thanks for the advice!
