What happens when weird weather hits: devastation

It's been a whirlwind weekend for many of us. We have experienced some unbelievable weather, where the Beast from the East bought arctic temperatures and a thick blanket of snow which covered most parts of the UK. Many of us were forced to stay home and not risk the slippery, cold conditions, however a few of us less fortunate were given no choice but to stay the night at the office or even sleep in our cars!

To top off the freezing weather conditions we were receiving, Storm Emma came thrashing in which hit us hard, especially our coastlines. Our wildlife has taken a battering too, both marine and terrestrial. We saw a plethora of wildlife flock to our gardens in search for food, where a huge number of you recorded flocks of fieldfare and redwing making a welcomed appearance into your gardens.

Sadly though, some sights were not as welcomed as others.

On March 3rd, local volunteers flocked to a beach in Holyhead, Wales to join forces and begin a mass beach clean following the chaos caused by Storm Emma. You may think this beach is covered in snow, but if you look closely you will see that it is in fact thousands of blocks of polystyrene, broken apart by the shear force of the storm.

Thanks to the local community of volunteers, the polystyrene on this beach is being bagged up and moved away from this sensitive ecosystem.

Local beach-goes were utterly stunned to find mounds of dead marine life including; starfish, crustaceans, molluscs and fish that were found washed up along the beaches in Thanet, Kent and between Hunstanton and Old Hunstanton in Norfolk, following the wreckage caused by the storm and the big freeze.

It is thought that the sudden cold temperatures caused these sea creatures to hunker down, but the stormy tides dislodged and threw them onto the beaches.

These juvenile lobsters were also washed up in their thousands in East Yorkshire. Attempts are being made to help rescue and revive these crustaceans by placing them in salt water before releasing them back into the sea.
