When you get events on the scale of the economic crisis/crises that we now face even if a few individuals are found to be culpable how do you possibly assign a sentence that will prevent this happening again?

I assume Gordon will be providing some timely measures with regard to regulation whilst preserving his "Macaverty the Cat" reputation for never being near disaster.

But there seems to be no dispute that the horse has well and truly bolted. This is uncharted territory as the global aspect was not there for the (previous) Wall St Crash.

The thing I most DON'T want to hear is Paul Mason saying the Chinese stock market is going to go belly up in a month!

As a poor, previously decent senior citizen I'm ashamed to admit that I have contracted a very prevalent disease, I'm suffering from schadenfreude!

An angle you might like to think about is Brown the brand. Much of the criticism of the PM by the Labour rebels is about his policies (e.g. failure to apply a Windfall Tax). But in reality it is a Brand image problem. The Brown brand (IMHO) is damaged beyond repair. Nothing that he can do can restore it. When a brand is holed below the waterline as badly as his is it sinks. So although the purists would like to say that Brown is weak because he is a failed manager (he isn’t, as Peter Oborne admitted recently), or because he has the wrong policies (not true again) in fact he can’t win because his brand identity is blown – a bit like Gerald Ratner once upon a time!

Interesting that you (or anyone) should see a person in that light. Look what politics has done to us!

Brown is just a person. His flaws, as a person, have been manifest: McCavity absences, finger nails still chewed in late 50s, consuming hatred for Tony (justified but not impressive) persistent false smile and strange choice of words when without script.

Britain should be able to find a better leader than this - but probably not among the ranks of party politics. SPOIL PARTY GAMES. Vote wisely.

I spoke to one of my friends this morning who's been made redundant from Lehmans. What a mess! Who knows what will happen to other investment banks.
