Not too long ago, large numbers of black people were making the equally racist assertion that they supported him because he was black!

Thank you for your response. What I do like about Barack Obama is both his intellect and his feeling and open nature. I do not analyse every word he says and I don't always agree with him on everything anyway.
I have always felt affinity with him in respect to his approach to politics, communication and culture, though, for example, we do not seem to share necessarily the same taste for music, etc. It's just possible that you do not understand what it is rather than the other way round. One reason for the affinity, however, I think, is his lifelong exposure to different cultures and different people bringing him up as a child, things I've experienced myself.
I don't want to go into the analysis of the differences between Barack Obama and Tony Blair here but you seem obsessive making the same comment over and over again. It's becoming tedious. Why not criticise specific things he's either written or said in his speeches, for example? That would make it much more interesting.
By the way, Barrie the sweeper is black black.

This appears to me to raise the issue of Barack Obamas COLOUR indeed his BLACKNESS. Fair comment? But is 'black' the simple opposite of 'white'? I VENTURE to suggest that Barack Obama has a combination of 'non-white' (as opposed to black black) and of white, that is found attractive by self-identifying white people - in the way they find a tan attractive - but found 'black' by self-identifying black people in terms of a, longed for, success over the historic white dominance. To avoid being 'holed' again, I leave the rest of what I would wish to write to the intelligent reader.

You have pointed out how this has occured in USA and elsewhere, but I can concur only with regard to United Kingdom.

We were once proud of our resistance to intimidation, but our independence of thought and action have been fettered by legislation, initially against unfair discrimination but progressively all-embracing. Our true identity and nature has also become hidden within the miscellaneous category of 'British' which no longer defines or distinguishes the English. That is why I place some hope in the recent entry of organisations bearing the title English. A fairly forlorn hope, but it might catch on, particularly if the Scots decide to go for independence. Otherwise,it could ultimately result in more clashes of the cultures or self-extinction.

Of course there would have probably never have been any Toxic Waste to Africa trade if the eco-fascists hadn't stopped companies building toxic waste incinerators in Europe, particularly Britain. Such incinerators are perfectly safe and environmentally sound if fitted with the latest flue gas scrubbing technology. Our local cement works burns print industry waste solvents to save coal, said fuel is just as potentially nasty as what was exported to Africa. All the sulphur is turned into gypsum, our local air quality is brilliant whatever duff coal they are using, a proportion of shredded scrap tyres and even some BSE suspect meat and bone meal.

Perhaps the day will come when we won't have to talk of people as black or yellow or white, but rather of what each individual represents as a person, at whatever level. Personally, with the election of Mr Obama as the President of the USA,I'm very happy for the black/black and black/white people at present after all the discrimination they have suffered by racial prejudice, but ultimately the colour shouldn't be an issue at all.

In the item on President Obama everybody was (rightly) very serious when discussing racism. Then one of the contributors explained his disagreement with something President Carter said by calling him (Carter)'senile'. Everybody, including Gavin Estler, thought this was hilarious and Gavin was still laughing when the item ended. Why do otherwise sensitive, intelligent people,have such contempt for older people? Shame on you Gavin. You have left me feeling very sad. But one day you'll be in your seventies, and you may not find it funny then to be verbally abused because someone disagrees with you.

I have just watched the discussion about Barack Obama. Armstrong Williams is absolutely right about the magnanimous character of the current President of the USA when apologised to. Methinks it's one of his greatest strengths, in fact. When one does things for real it's the issue at stake that counts, not some petty attacks and silly manipulations. I also think that it is a sign of greatness to have the ability of not taking everything thrown at one personally.

In my last few posts I've been singing Mr Obama's praises but to show I'm not a 'blind' follower of his, I'd like to express some doubts about his foreign disarmament policy. Belos is an example:
Apparently a 4 crew USA delegation is on its way to Poland with plans for scrapping the anti-rocket system previously envisaged by George Bush administration.
Well, I'm worried that he is giving in to pressure from Putin & co who after all isn't even the Russian President.

I can't bring the same level of intellect to bear on the topic, but I have my simplistic analysis of one reason we are vulnerable to assault, which is to do with our differencist nature. We have lost, or thrown out most of what JJ refers to as 'common purposes'.

As a boy, I had many groups to associate myself with from Cubs, Boy Scouts, even the Church Lad's Brigade, I joined them all, and had plenty of schoolmates and gangs too. WWII was a major common purpose for us all.

Later, I enjoyed the camaraderie of National Service, and at that time we still had respect for, and allegience to, the church, royalty, senior statesmen, Ö÷²¥´óÐã, and identified within a class system. All of those have now lost our respect for one reason or another - mainly due to mass media better informing us of the facts behind the fantasies.

In retirement, males have even fewer group associations, which is one reason for their obsession with one football, rugby or cricket team. That gene is missing in my family. So my main allegience or common purpose has been to family(now far-flung)and country of birth - England. Not having much in common with local community I cling to a vestige of patriotism (such as seen once a year at Last Night of the Proms).

Policies such as Multiculturalism, subservience to European Union and 'British' categorisation has eclipsed our English nationality and defamed patriotism, o'whelming them with groups that have strong common purposes. It's great being a differencist 'but united we stand, divided we fall' so we have only our blogging to voice our individual opinions, when we really need a national body to focus and amplify our views, on our way to becoming an ethnic minority in our own land. That's why I welcome organisations with 'English' in their title (English Workers' Union, etc)and hope that Scotland will go for independence.

One cannot form organisations for whites only, although the opposites are allowed to flourish, so Let's hear it for the English.

But, creating jobs for who?
The TUC conference didn't make very exciting viewing yesterday, passing plenty of motions unanimously without debate. However, one delegate in the Maritime Industry described himself and the British seaman as an endangered species and explained how they are being totally replaced by foreign crews. He stated that even British ships plying between British ports are exempt from minimum wage and apparently from HR legislation, and are employing cheap foreign labour at as low as £2/hour and working up to 90hr week.

This industry should be providing training programmes for some of our millions of unemployed youths, but it was stated that the government had failed to even reply to submissions over the past 2 years. After several false statements by Labour last year that most 'newly created' jobs went to British workers, it was established that most went to immigrants; and many of those jobs were 'newly-created' in the public sector in order to service the enlarged poipulation due to immigration!

I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but are these errors of ommission - or commission?

No it is to be expected that science and the break down of deference towards leaders means most peoples will realise that they have far more to be gained from cooperation. Evidence for this is seen in the EU - created to prevent the hostility of WWII breaking out , the UN, the international reaction to climate change.

People always do accept their "own kind" and not falling prey to those who try to manipulate others against a particular race or group is what prevents racist evil and all that entails.

Hello Newsnight! Any chance of covering this fundamental point with a PHILOSOPHER, in the near future? When you have 'done' cowardice, follow up with 'hero' and then perhaps 'courage'. Oh - and give the 'visual enhancers' a day off, when you do.

Passive racism is something that confronts everybody at some time - but most get over that hurdle as there is evidence in science that there are few differences between the races other than cosmetic ones.

Active racism based on vile notions of racial difference are clearly more to do with other psychological issues.

So those that try to bypass the fact that genetic variation IS greater within a race than between races are doing so from an incoherent and emotional mental state.

So, imagine. Another group. Say burglars. 9/11 SPIN-OFF: RATHER LIKE THE NON-STICK PAN (#63)

In my personal enquiry into the anomalous 'descent' of three building at 9/11, I fell over one of the theories floated to account for burnt cars. I then poked about bit on the internet.
I have no way of knowing the accuracy of the reports (and images) but would be amazed if the USA does NOT have a laser weapon, so do not dismiss claims that one is installled in a Jumbo, as on the web.
Were I in possession of such a weapon, I might well term it 'ship based' even if I knew it would be an aircraft carrier, and mounted on planes. It might put off the odd, thick enemy? Just a wild shot really - but sure to come.

Addendum (#61) To make the picture just a little bit more unpleasant (but realistic?), those who were very happy to make money out of the 'sub-prime' (underclass) population in the USA are not happy at all about the prospect of funding the same people's massively growing health-care needs.
