Uuummm what's so new about make do and mend? I've done that all my life, never wasted food, use it up in different ways. Can turn old clothes into new, and recycle any old fabric I can't use. Re-sew on buttons, patch clothes,the holes on knees and elbows, and I can even darn, and take the hem up on anything. Save all buttons and pieces of ribbon and odd pieces of fabric, waiting to make clothes for any future grandchildren or their teddies. Can just hear the howls of scorn and derision from my children! ; )

Can someone ask Jon Sopel not to be so excitable? I like his approach otherwise.

Shouldn't any studio link into the story about the 'sailors' who drifted into Iranian waters also include the word 'incompetent'?

What kind of 'sailors' sent off to compete in a race without up to date charts? None that I know of. Sir Walter Raleigh would have had shipped that crew over board.

Now is it any surprise that poverty has risen in Britain, I see it went up from 2004 quite markedly, now that wouldn't be because the eastern block joined the EU and we had massive immigration, now would it?!

Another problem the minimum wage, without this restricion wages would be at least around £7per hour, so people would earn more than they recieve on benefits. Mass immigration has forced and kept wages down. Otherwise there would be a shortage of workers and wages would have been forced up.

And do the Rowntree foundation also include all the new immigrants in their report, after all they come from some of the poorest areas in the world so would be poor anyway, so do they also make more poverty.

Jon Sopel. I too thought he had taken some lessons from the Kirsty Wark school of presenting - ie. Shouting makes you understood better.

It's all topsy turvy these days, all in the hope of atracting attention

I'm hoping to watch some of the bits from last night's NN, especially having commented on Jon Sopel's niceness, etc, to be able to say something sensible about him apparently straining his vocal cords. I wonder whether he acted upon somebody's advice in order to show he is not a push over.

However, I'm hoping not to be too hard on him. I don't think he himself deserves it. But as to his advisers, well...

Good link Roger. Will read properly later (family bereavement earlier in week has me a little out of synch and discombobulated) but this phrase flew at me..

The word 'irritant' sprang to mind. Like the tiny stone in a shoe, dust in the eye, pollen in the nose, at the very least a thorough swooshing out (Tsunami?) may be required.

I think it sadly unlikely that the 'irritant' pieces of grit at the top of the current food chain have the capacity to become pearls. And if they did, doubtless some leader, generous with the spoils of his people will be convinced to scatter them broadly before swine.

Recently elsewhere I have offered, perhaps somewhat flippantly:
1) perhaps GOD should have rested a bit earlier and left out the 'intelligent' life bit.

2) Many a true word said on celluloid. Jeff Goldblum in one of the worst movies of all time (Jurassic park) - the oscar must go to Armageddon! "Just because we CAN, doesn't mean we SHOULD!" And since your link mentions T Rex clearly, not off topic.

I've just watched Jon Sopel's edition of Wednesday's Newsnight - and he was extremely good - both with his interview with Richard Holbrooke on the question of Afghanistan plus the soon-to-be charged for access to articles on the web with Sekoff & Perry. It's always great to have Jon on Newsnight :o)

I have only been able to come up with one solution. If 'New HomSap' (post wipe-out) evolves REDESIGNED such that we 'do' all the traumas: birth, helplessness, puberty - and then PUPATE, to become 'caterpillar soup', from which to build viable adults, replete with wisdom, Earth's problems would be solved. The trouble is that intermediate stage. Anyone know how that gets selected for?

#7 Thank you for that excellent link Roger, a lot of food for thought! How on earth did you find it?! But he thinks you should stop worrying about saving us humans from imminent doom, he feels we should just allow nature to run it's course! Although I wonder if the world would get over run with herbivors, but then I suppose their time would come, and they would then become extinct. Probably us humans back in some form eating them! ; )

What if................ there is an ultimately very clever counter effect of all of the dubious science we are being fed, deliberate or accidental.

What if enough people the world over are scared witless by the prospect of Armageddon in their or their children's lifetime, they all loss the will or ability to reproduce. Some say (Voice of Clarkson) that is already happening through western lifestyle choices.

What if the population not only slows down but goes into a spiralling decline.

How would you (and who would) manage the situation to extract only the purest basic human (newborns?) and begin the work of the Original Jedi. The New Hope.

Recalls to mind one of the scariest films I ever remember (perhaps it was my age at the time) The Omega Man. Recently remade in original title of I am Legend (not yet seen)

Or should we just settle for a blue planet, void of himan interference/irritation, pure and magical when viewed 'from a distance'?

Make do and Mend - I was brought up by parents who went through the war in families of modest means and so I ate meals made from leftovers all my childhood. FACT - meals made from leftovers are the most delicious meals, because the food flavours have 'developed'. I met a woman once who told me that her leftover special, a thick soup, was called Toadistroni to appeal to the kids, I love the name!

RBS bonuses - I tried out my new theory on the lady on the till in the local supermarket and she agreed. If banks can only attract the best personnel by paying large bonuses, then in order to render our hospitals safe from, latterly MRSA and currently, c.diff (clostridium difficile - a food poisoning organism), should we be offering attractive bonuses to hospital cleaners? I'm sure plastic aprons are simply flicking bugs all over the place, I mean cloth is atleast absorbant. Whereas, we just need a bit more elbow grease - I believe in the old days, elbow grease was a happy companion of make-do-and-mend?

I wrote an article about the abuse of food safety theory and it was called Toadistroni and the Blue Glove, never published it, too controversial. In the food industry, staff treat 'the blue glove' as if it is a magical protection from all germs. However, it is just as easy to x-contaminate with a blue glove as it is with your hands.

I knew a woman who would love to have HACCP-ed the NHS, it never happened and I suspect that may have been because of the cost of documentation. But the basic idea of CCPs can be seen in the '5 steps to handwashing' signs on hospital walls.

Conspiracy thought for the day - 'follow the money' - what possible reason could encourage the UK public to accept privatisation of the NHS? Hygiene so bad that people die from infections unrelated to the reason they go into hospital, maybe?

Jon Sopel's performance was a little more excitable than usual but I didn't feel he was shouting as such and anyway, the issue that was being tackled didn't require him to be too challenging.

It was good to hear quite detailed explanation and analysis of how Obama and the Americans are hoping to proceed in Afghanistan. I thought the whole thing was rather well done.

The true definition of the French term "chic" originally referred to an ability to make a variety of fashion statements from a very limited wardrobe. Unfortunately, within the anglophone world it has been mis-translated to actually mean a la mode and, become a byword for consumerism. Which has led to the squandering of endless billions on the latest thing and, had an uncalculated and, probably incalculably large environmental impact. Never mind the impact of cosmetics. Most of which actually end up in the bin!
