I've not seen very much on why the balance of authority opinion has swung behind a Greek default, other than commonsense which indicates they can't pay it off and they can't cut public spending without getting into the liquidity trap of a shrinking economy.

IMHO the Uk will shortly be in the firing line too, as the economy is at best flatlining even before the public spending cuts really bite, the welfare bill grows, tax take falls and debt rises not falls, as it has everywhere else drastic cuts have been tried.

If & when this happens, will Cameron be able to sack George Osborne? He's looking pretty beleagured already - and who would replace GO? If the economic plicy here is one thing, it's the bedrock of the coalition - if it manifestly fails, it's hard to see how they could backpedal without losing all legitimacy.

The elite, two factions, each wary of the other. Two cabals, each intent on the annihilation of the obvious foe. Yet the required destruction, of the group that each opposes, is sought for entirely different reasons., one seeks to destroy those whom challenge their - heralded as by right - superiority, the other seeks to occupy the 鈥榟ouse鈥� of their enemy. Strangely - to those that look up to these 鈥� inhabitors of the other places鈥� - all appears serene and secure.

But not so!

Despite their - often not so - quiet contempt of, and for, each other all members of both groups have two much higher desires than for the obliteration of the other. Namely the continuation of the collective and - the species imperative - survival of the self!

@ Lizzy #7 - Thanks for that article. Regardless of the amount of immigrants going to the USA and the UK, it must be remembered that the USA is over 40 times bigger than the UK. According to the World Bank's 2009 population figures, Britain has 61.8million inhabitants.....and all EU borders (except Denmark) are open to all....... there's only so many you can fit on an island! At the next election, perhaps people might seriously think about voting for UKIP.

Looking at the bigger picture .....

Virtually none of those in either house wanted to take a stand simply because they were potential 鈥榲ictims鈥� of (my) previously mentioned 鈥渃upboard files鈥� (Everybody has a skeleton in a cupboard somewhere. Some can live with it, some can鈥檛 and some are terrified beyond paralysis! Let鈥檚 be straight., How much - in a top rated restaurant i.e. the upper echelons of 鈥榩ower鈥� - does a satiated appetite cost? Let鈥檚 be honest .... There鈥檚 no such thing as a free lunch, at any time of year!

Sadly most sitting in both the houses of Westminster were, as individuals, terrified to - to use someone else's post comment - throw stones for fear of being singled out. One tried but..... Now they all take the high-ground and - vocally - join in the hail-storm! (Most notably the recent 鈥榖arrage鈥� from one newbie was beyond the worst level of hypocrisy! But, Hey! The bandwagon is rolling! ) It鈥檚 getting a little bit like a quasi lynch mob, safety in numbers, each watching out for others but primarily looking after themselves and praying that they do not stray too far from the safety of the pack.

It would be easy to think that no member of the public will pay too much attention to any attempt to smear any of those on the 鈥榓ttack鈥� but the cupboard still retains it鈥檚 content. A recent referral to this cupboard soon got one 鈥榰p there鈥� wayward 鈥榩up鈥� back to the litter.

Now here鈥檚 some more issues;

How far up does this all go? And where will the buck stop? Are some 鈥榰p-there鈥檚鈥� really in full pursuit to keep the cupboard permanently closed? Whom is shielding whom? Whom is next to be placed on the sacrificial altar?

Absolutely loved Jeremy with Hugh Grant/Lord Fowler/Alton discussion on the alleged practices of a few journalists who published confidential medical records and hacked phones, and as pointed out by Lord Fowler (more of him please), are illegal. :o) Chris Huhne was absolutely slaughtered by Jeremy tonight!

Pity Jeremy either finds energy policy too boring, or can find too little to disagree with Chris Huhne's position. We might have learnt something (instead of going over the same old territory on Andy Coulson) if the questioning had been as tough and sceptical on energy policy as we usually get on other issues. The mess announced today is riddled with fallacies and illogicalities, but the interview failed even to scratch the surface or hint at problems.

Two-thirds of gas is used for heating. Heating is highly seasonal and nuclear is highly expensive if not run for baseload, so nuclear is no replacement for gas. And people need heat when it's cold (and usually still), so wind is no replacement for gas. And heat is mostly small-scale and distributed, whereas carbon capture and storage is large-scale and concentrated, so CCS is no replacement for gas. So how does Huhne get away with arguing that we should bankrupt the country promoting these white elephants on the grounds that we will otherwise be too dependant on gas?

Feeble.

So bad I'll say it twice.....



I think Huhne can forget any of his energy policies, with this many people keep arriving we'll run out of any type of power shortly.

Follow the money indeed on this story, but also the tactics of using personal infomation in a coercive manner.

Keeping files on employees also appears to be a News Corp MO to stave off whilstleblowers, well at least on the other side of the Atlantic:

To my mind - all the well aired caveats notwithstanding - your summation leads to tidal power. Even lower yield tides ARE CONSTANT and, in the long term, must surely be cost effective? In Britain you are never far from a tide, and we have marine engineering expertise to spare (plus inventive ability unrivalled).

Nuclear it is then.

Of course, that PR Huhne is 'doing Energy' Tells how Dave's mind is working - we are being sold what we don't want, that can't work, at a high price.

@21 Good link Hawkeye. People who think that the NI story isn't important, should look at how the US has become more polarised and less governable over the last two decades. Fox has played a big part in this, and that is what Rupert wants for this country. The consequences for the US are economic and social as the current budget crisis shows.

Krugman's take may be predictable, but it is widely shared on both sides of the Atlantic.



I think his phraseology "phone-hacking scandal metastasizes" is particularly apt. The late Denis Potter named the cancer which killed him "Rupert".

In another blog, Krugman comments on the US scene: "You can鈥檛 make any sense of American political discourse if you give everyone credit for really wanting what they claim to want. My sense is that there are very few true deficit hawks; the vast majority of those who claim that title are really just using the deficit to pursue the goal of a more unequal society."

Look at the current UK government's strategy with this in mind. We could cut OUR deficit by making companies like NI pay a proper amount of tax on their UK activities. It's ALL connected!

Re @16, @22. One of the big problems with renewables is reliable storage of energy. I am sure that this is a solvable electrical/chemical engineering problem. For a start, excess tidal power could be used to produce hydrogen gas by electrolysis of water.

A big problem is that too much government policy is decided on the basis of to whom it gives a business opportunity, rather than the public good.

Oh dear. It seems one cannot mention the word "Racket" on the 主播大秀 blogs!

Despite it having a somewhat pertinent definition (courtesy of Wikipedia):
