Tonight on Newsnight, Richard Watson has new information on the latest hacking allegations being laid at the News of the World's door.

We will be discussing the story and its fallout with former tabloid editor Alastair Campbell and News of the World insider Paul McMullan. Then talking about the future of newspapers will be Huffington Post chief Arianna Huffington and the new editor of The Independent Chris Blackhurst.

Justin Rowlatt reports on what the loss of 1,400 jobs at train maker Bombardier says about the British approach to manufacturing and procurement deals, and about the Coalition's growth strategy.

And Paul Mason has a strong film about Pathfinder housing scheme in Stoke-on-Trent, part of John Prescott's grand regeneration plan, and the devastating consequences of cutting funding for it.

The Libs have introduced an unfolding nightmare and all they can do us smear us.

    ecolizzy at 50 Mon:

oh well, we try and warn people. We get smeared everytime with the racist card. "those Daily Mail readers are really nasty people"..thats the old refrain. I'm getting sick of hearing it but our way of life is threatened daily, a slow creep to the slaughter house..our liberty already curtailed whilst the governing elite and their mandrin bureaucratic class bend over backwards to accomodate the newly arrivals: "oh that law doesn't apply to you, only the white English get hounded for those bills and fines".

Have you ever wondered why they are given leeway in circumstances that the rest of us have to adhear to? thats because the fear of any accusations of racism neuters the authorities, be it the police, the council tax collectors or the TV licence bill agent knocking on doors..they back-off unless its middle class or working class whitey.

Heres one for you: Have you every wondered why certain sections of immigrant working society go into small retail business and cab driving?...its very easy to fiddle the tax. Do they get taken to task when found out fiddling tax returns etc?..there is a noted reluctance, and it ain't just my own personel experience that I draw from, its as common as the grass getting cut in the summertime!

Look, I know what goes on, I've been round the block more than once but when you hear the nonsense from the Beeb and others, there really must be a barrier of knowledge between us and the governing and media class. Things have to change...and quick.

    # 1 Agreed Kev, what annoys me is the presuming that these people are unintelligent, and wouldn't possibly be so nasty as to fix a scam up, or fiddle taxes, or the system to get what and where they want. i.e. the Nigerian woman who had a scan at home, discovered it was quins, and promptly flew here for all her free health care, now why do we idiots let this happen?!

You're right about the barrier of knowledge, if you haven't ever been poor and struggled and watched the cunning ways people find around problems, you haven't have a clue. Never think the poor are really thick, they will probably have the last laugh, live free from cradle to grave.

    POACHER TURNED POACHER

Are you sure Campbell is a reliable witness?

I've just watched a report on Hugo Cheve celebrating 200 years of independence via that impartial and balanced C4 news outlet. Considering the almost praiseworthy manner this report was given, I'm surprised C4 didn't have it as the lead story. 主播大秀 may be full of lefties but the real hard core Communists all reside at C4 news.

Well at least I know that the treatment for cancer that Chavez has been recieving appears to be working, well he did go to Cuba for his treatment via Spanish doctors and their evil western medicine - the kinda cancer treatment only leaders of a country can get (that last bit wasn't mentioned in the report -I'm just filling in the known gaps for you there).. I bet Jon Snow can rest easily knowing that the treatment is working and Chavez can continue his brand of Marxism. You know, kill all your opponents and control the media kinda Marxism.

Huffingtons on right now. Have you ever visited a free speech forum? It would
laughable if i wasn't paying your wages.

  • Comment number 11.

Newsnight have totally missed the point on the Bombardier contract, the puppet government have given the Thameslink contract to the Germans in order that the stock market parasites can change money. Also there is a greedy CBI move to destroy all jobs with good wages and then re-employ skilled people at half wages.

Very interesting debate on the NOTW phone hacking allegations by Jeremy, with Campbell topping it off :p. Of course you're going to get plugs for publications on the show - otherwise they would not have an incentive to appear as a guest.......

    "Phone Hacking."

    Call that a debate? What a Left-wing love-in.

Miss. Huffington: the U.S. media establishment wouldn't ever stoop so low. Give me a break. A media that is (more) commercially sensitive and has been for a lot longer than here, wouldn't ever behave so reprehensively? It's laughable.

Does the media feel emboldened, as Ofcom's investigation nears an end?

"LET'S BE ABSOLUTELY FRANK" (Alastair Campbell)

The slavish adoration of Magus Blair is still evident. As Campbell was such a bad judge of men (and is still in denial) we must assume he is on the programme simply because he has another fictional work out.

This is the Age of Perversity.

In passing: Campbell should resist jibes at slips of the tongue (emolliated). He is in print with the Blair quote: "I feel the hand of History upon my shoulder", but Blair ACTUALLY said: "OUR shoulder".

Not a reliable witness - on NewsyNighty or at Chilcot.

The studio backdrop used by Newsnight during the discussions of the phone hacking scandal tonight demonstrated the lack of sensitivity inherent in journalism today. I'm sure the bereaved and tortured parents of the murdered children would have been interested in the views of the contributors but I imagine it was too painful for them to be staring at the blown-up photographs of their beloved children. Images of the journalists implicated in the scandal would have been appropriate and would have shown some compassion.

I expected more from the Newsnight team, but sensationalism seems to have found root there as well. Shame on you!

Are any comments, that have been "referred for further consideration", ever reposted?

Is the mod ever deemed to have over-reacted?

Has THIS over-stepped the mark, like the rule-abiding post, above?

    Re #phone-hacking
Near 4am, I hope you are all asleep now, and have switched off your mobis to stop evil hackers finding out if you have a new message (like, 鈥淜ev, are you coming down the pub later?鈥)

It IS reprehensible that private dicks and investigative journos break into people's privacy. But do not be na茂ve, they work in a very grey an' greasy area often helping the Police where Blue can't tread for fear of, er, the Law. I wouldn't dare suggest that Police tip off the Press in return. The Police will not want a full enquiry, and Cameron will not sanction it, I bet.
There might have to be a 'head on the block' for deleting messages on poor Milly Dowler's phone in the middle the search for her: interfering with a Police investigation, you see.

All the hand-wringing and apologetic guff now... ugh!
Shock! Horror! Rebekah Wade emails her staff that she never knew such horrid things could go on!' ...and she is in journalism?
    Don't make me laugh.

THE BEHAVIOUR OF CHILDREN SAYS MUCH OF THE PARENTING

I assert that the behaviour of Britain is symptomatic of its governance.

Shock-horror! Media have no scruples. No surprise! Prime Ministers HIRE unscrupulous media manipulators, for their QUESTIONABLE CONTACTS AND METHODS.

Shock horror! We treat old people abominably. No surprise! Money rules - carp care yields high profits (and big party donations?) Manglish carers come cheap and chippy.

Shock horror! Tobacco is a poison. No surprise. Government is addicted to the tax.

Shock horror! Alcohol underlies much of society's ills. No surprise! See 'Tobacco'.

And while Britain descends into cynical deceit, IN ALL WALKS OF LIFE, Dave prances round Johnnie Foreigner Land, promising 'The Taliban' a place in THEIR OWN government - if they behave; he might just as well be talking to his pooch, on the Chequers' Croquet lawn, for a photo op.

WESTMINSTER PARENTING IS CHAOTIC. THE CHILDREN ARE OUT OF CONTROL.

    Who ya gonna blame?

Is there some reason why an ex-minister from Labour hasn't been asked why they signed off the bid process which so disadvantaged our manufacturing.

Why did Justin Rowlatt infer that the job losses were due to the coalition decision to accept the Siemens bid and ignore the May 2011 letter from the management to government saying that jobs would go no matter what.

Why did Campbell appear in the 'future of newspapers' debate with the publisher who's online service he is helping to launch today.

    Fair and balanced ?

  • Comment number 23.

What is the point of Newsnight? The programme is composed almost entirely of grim guesses about what 'could' happen in the future or what 'might' already have happened in the past. I don't believe your guesses and speculation are no more valid than those of anyone else, especially as your predictions have been wrong so many times in the past.
You should explain to viewers that when you waffle on behind a veil of mealymouthed caveats it is because because you have no proof for your story and need to protect yourselves from legal action.

'We will be discussing the story and its fallout with former tabloid editor Alastair Campbell '

    Oh, that's what he was?

Any chance of even attempting the iPlayer to see what more might get 'discussed' pretty much sealed if Mr. Prescott gets invoked on top, again.

All confirmed by some fine commentary/review above, well, as has passed referral.

Is it possible to get ratings figures down below zero?

    STRANGER THAN FICTON (#22)

Excuse my asking, but was your nom de blog inspired by Lord Archer? I seem to remember his (blameless) mother wrote a local column, including his tiny exploits, in which he was called Tuppence.

police did not investigate the claims that police were paid for news and cameron is good mates with the ex editor. so does this mean police and political protection?

one aim is to destroy uk capability. next time trains need to be ordered there won't be a uk option. it has to go overseas. slam dunk.

    Hacks hack:

I wonder if this is wide spread throughout the Journo profession and not just the News Of The World.
Is the pope a Catholic? are MPs bent?...do bears do what they do in the woods and if a tree falls in those woods and there is nobody around..does it make any noise? oh so many question...and all easily answered.

Can you please not have Campbell on again, he's an over-blown has-been riding on his past infamy and the folks at the Beeb need to be aware of that. Stop having him on. You'll meet more informed people down the road from where your at, nip into a the pub or wine bar..you'll get what you want for the the price of a drink...get outta your bubble and find them.

Can you please not have Huffington on again as she made millions on the back of free contributors to her online rag. The Huff post started off fine but ended very nasty indeed..and thats because she's a nasty piece of work. Newsnight, your getting worse by the week...whats happening? is the bubble that your in imploding?

It is obviously to anyone that News International is untouchable. They have been hacking into people鈥檚 phones and emails for years 鈥 all of this time, their crimes have been covered up by the police, an act supported by the politicians who desperately seek their support. I don鈥檛 think taking over BSkyB and the hacking scandal are separate issues. The whole point against the BSkyB deal was News International already has a monopolised influence in the media industry, and clearly they do!

  • Comment number 31.

please have Campbell on as many times as you like, he is better than the red Tory Blonde ...what a ludricous description a Red Tory....how is that?
