Poppy Fascism?

Post categories:

William Crawley | 13:26 UK time, Friday, 10 November 2006

poppy.jpgThe Channel Four newsreader Jon Snow has raised his voice against "poppy fascism" -- an undue pressure, as he sees it, placed on broadcasters to make them wear the symbol of the UK's Remembrance Day commemorations. In a Channel Four he acknowledges (if that's the word -- seems a bit McCarthyesque) that he wears a poppy in his private life, but he does not feel it appropriate to wear on on air. His colleague Alex Thomspon : "I'm a journalist - not a promoter for the Royal British Legion, or pink breast cancer thingies, or be nice to dogs day."

I agree with Shane. Right now in Miami Florida we are supposed to celebrate Thanksgiving yet we have Christmas Decorations in the stores.

Lindsay Taylor says that the reason he doesn't want to wear a poppy on the air is because newscasters should make an effort to appear to be as impartial and objective as possible, and that his decision not to wear a poppy on the air "is derived purely from a desire to appear objective at all times."

Objective about what, exactly? Objective about whether or not commemorating the sacrifice of veterans and civilians in war is right and appropriate? Is that really something there is any debate about in the UK today? What a bloody sad state of affairs.

John, there's certainly a debate about the poppy in Northern Ireland, where many see this as a symbol of Birishness or even impetrialism.

Those unable to wear the poppy are shameless. What a pity so many people thse days lack basic humanity.
