Dream ticket or nightmare?

clinton_obama.jpg"It would be the worst mistake that could be made. That would just accumulate the negative aspects of both candidates. If you take the 50 percent of US voters [according to polls] who just don't want to vote for Clinton and add to it whatever element there might be who don't think Obama is white enough or old enough or experienced enough or because he he's got a middle name that sounds Arab, you could have the worst of both worlds."

Former US President Jimmy Carter explains why he thinks Barack Obama should pick someone else as his vice-presidential running mate. (Source: ).

This is a tough one really. Part of what Carter says is true. Clinton galvanizes the Republican vote, there is no doubt about that. That could be harmful at a time when the Republicans are fractured. On the other hand Clinton carries a large amount of white working class voters who, if joined with the massive amount of new voters Obama has energized, could make it almost impossible for the Republicans to win.
My opinion is that Obama will not offer her the VP and will try to keep her on side by offering her the position of senate majority leader (especially as Ted Kennedy is on his way out). He does not want her in the White House. Could you blame him?

I disagree with Carter. If Obama wants to win, he'll pick Clinton as VP.

I agree, RatzoRizzo. The Senate Majority Leader position is the obvious role for Hillary as an alternative to the VP spot. Recent reports from the Obama VP search team suggest that they are looking seriously at VP candidates with significant military records -- in an obvious effort to neutralize John McCain's military and foreign policy experience. Senator Jim Webb must surely tick those boxes too.

Thats a good point. Military records and the whole issue of patriotism is going to be important in this election, especially during the debates with McCain. It is an area were Obama is clearly lacking and having a decorated Vietnam veteran who also happened to be secretary of defense under Reagan would certainly benefit his arguments.
