Gore Vidal explains "the facts of life" to David Dimbleby

Post categories:

Amid all the history-making on TV last night, there were a few bizarre moments. Of these, the most bizarre was this interview David Dimbleby attempted to conduct with that distinguished American man of letters Gore Vidal. The result is variously hilarious and painful.

I don't see what's hilarious or painful: Gore Vidal may be deaf, old and ornery, but his understanding and insight are unblunted: both of the nature of American politics and of the tendency for news reporters to have agendas.

Freeclench- You're nuts, this was a hilarious interview and fun to watch for that reason.

Somebody was hitting the Night Nurse a bit early!

Poor David is normally dealing with people (politicians) keen to avoid the truth. Here he got Gore Vidal skirting around the fringes of reality.

    Freeclench- You're nuts,

    Yeah? So?

    Heretical:

I鈥檝e heard of Jack Daniel鈥檚 and Dixie Dew, but Night Nurse was surely a horse.

鈥淭he republicans love money and war鈥 was a moment of clarity amid the mist.

... but Night Nurse was surely a horse.

Now that is a funny comment!!

  • Comment number 7.

I am rather appalled at the suggestion that this broadcast was both hilarious and painful.

    It was neither.

It showed a once great intellect, somewhat befogged by age and grief, still true nonetheless to the principles which underpinned its life's work and still careless of the opinions and perceptions of others. There is nothing painful in that - nor is there anything funny - unless you have the sensibilities which find amusement in the graceless antics of Ross and Brand.

Gore Vidal is a nut. He always was a nut. He happens to be a left wing nut like Noam Chomsky whom 主播大秀 also interviewed. 主播大秀 presents these people as though the are main stream observers of the American scene when the fact is that of those Americans who even know who they are, most consider them to be elements of what we call the lunatic fringe. That is why 主播大秀 likes them. They serve 主播大秀's own political anti-American agenda.

Portwyne- You are a beacon of joy and light.

  • Comment number 10.

    Portwyne:

Yes, you have a good point. As for the lunatic fringe, well, reading Marcus's comments is quite hilarious and painful at times.

  • Comment number 11.

Of-course, John. Don't you know Jesus doesn't want me for a sunbeam?

  • Comment number 12.

    Peter:
    BTW:

Night Nurse won 2 champion hurdles and 32 races in all, nearly as many as Desert Orchid (34). He was a great horse with lop ears, great courage and a tremendous will to win (like Dessie).

I saw Dessie in the flesh at Fairyhouse and at Down Royal, where I actually touched his snout. Now, there's real gods for you.

  • Comment number 13.

    Marcus:

Sometimes I wonder if 'lunatic fringe' in the context of America is a misnomer. Should it really be 'lunatic mainstream'?

  • Comment number 14.

    MarcusAureliusII, re: your #8:

There is absolutely nothing anti-American about Gore Vidal, Noam Chomsky, or the 主播大秀.

Chomsky often criticizes US government and US big business, but you must distinguish between -a- US government and -the- US government. Americans *must* be able to criticize our own government without having our patriotism attacked, because without the freedom to criticize our government we would have precious little to be patriotic about.

But back to Gore Vidal --

If you can imagine a number of teenagers asking an adult about relationships, getting a cogent but politely indirect reply, and replying with too-graphic specifying questions -- and then laughing at the funny reaction they get -- that's basically what happened here.

The two people Obama reminds us most strongly of are Martin Luther King and J. F. Kennedy: and that really worries us. But there is a taboo in America about discussing such a possibility too directly, and Gore Vidal is not the only one on television who has backed off when pressed.

And it just doesn't seem right to make a blanket accusation against conservatives when the vast majority of conservatives are good patriotic people.

No, I don't see the humor.

Was David Dimbleby, interviewing Gore Vidal, or was it Bore Vidal.

    Hi Brian

    re Night Nurse.

I guess I just went right ahead and demonstrated my unsurpassed knowledge of racing!

    Portwyne

If you were a sunbeam, would you be an Alpine MKI, or a Talbot Saloon?

  • Comment number 17.

    Peter

I remember as a child we had a Sunbeam mixer in the kitchen - I used to love raw cake mix straight out of the bowl. Something tells me that if I were a Sunbeam, I'd probably be a mixer...

  • Comment number 18.

Just Gore in a dress - down moment.

Raise a glass for me, G.V.

  • Comment number 19.

Portwyne- So he does want you for a Sunbeam or he doesn't?

  • Comment number 20.

I find a man applauding the return of Lord Keynes due to recent economic events humorous. Lord Keynes never left.
