Catching up ...

William Crawley | 04:54 UK time, Thursday, 12 February 2009

You may have imagined that I have fallen into a deep well with no wifi zone at the base. This is only partly true. I will have climbed into a hot spot by next week. Already, there is much to write about: I will leave the writing to you: what are the stories that have rattled, enraged, inspired or amused you this week? Was it the story of the Northern Ireland Environment minister who blocked an ad that invited the public to use less energy? Or the British home secretary's decision to exclude a Dutch MP from the UK because he described the Koran as a "fascist book"? Or are you currently trying to edit Titian's Wikipedia entry to re-write his lifespan? If Orwell were alive today, he'd have a field day with those three stories alone.

Christian Voice and two other Christian groups are now running their own bus advertising campaign during February, in response to the atheist bus advertisements (That campaign ended at the end of January).
One advert by a Christian group states: "There definitely is a God, So join the Christian Party and enjoy your life."

The Humanist Society response is below. (They support freedom of expression.)

It's possible the Humanists will run a different bus advertisement campaign later in the year.
Is imitation the sincerest form of flattery?

The story specifically for today would be the Darwin Day bi-centenary. A hopeful story from my home country of the Netherlands was that shortly before Darwin Day, the former director of the evangelical broadcaster renounced creationism and turned to theistic evolution. He went as far as to apologize for advocating creationism to viewers in the past:

Some of the more rabid members of the evangelical broadcaster were up in arms about it. They'd probably also be aghast by efforts of the vatican to promote the idea of compatibility between evolution and the bible:

The vatican even goes as far as to try to appropriate evolution to some extent, quote from the article:

Father Giuseppe Tanzella-Nitti, Professor of Theology at the Pontifical Santa Croce University in Rome, said that Darwin had been anticipated by St Augustine of Hippo. The 4th-century theologian had 鈥渘ever heard the term evolution, but knew that big fish eat smaller fish鈥 and that forms of life had been transformed 鈥渟lowly over time鈥. Aquinas had made similar observations in the Middle Ages, he added.

It must be a tough time to be a protestant fundie right now, with all the evolution related documentaries being shown, the biggest christian church trying not just to accommodate evolution but even to try to claim it for itself, the Anglican church apologizing to Darwin recently, and Darwin Day events everywhere.

Talking of Darwin Day events, a couple of the regulars of the blog here are probably holding a virtual Skype meeting this evening, following John Wrights regret that he could not attend the Darwin Day W&T bloggers dinner last weekend. Everyone is welcome to join in of course.

    greets,
    Peter

Heres another one you might of missed William.

  • Comment number 4.

I don't understaned how anyone could have missed it. The Church of England has said that they should spread the word that Jesus Christ is mankind's lord and savior and that convincing people who have not yet found the true path through Jesus Christ is commanded in the bible. But some "liberals" are afraid that would offend Moslems. Doesn't anyone watch or listen to the news on 主播大秀? :-)

Also, decoding DNA of Neanderthals has proven that at least some of us may not have completely evolved yet. Their DNA is between 99.5% and 99.9% like ours. Having read many postings here, I have my candidates whose DNA is probably most like that of the Neanderthals at the 99.9% level.

They say Neanderthals may have been able to speak. I wonder if any who are secretly still around are posting on this blog site. I'll bet they won't admit it. But I can tell. Vee haf vays :-)
