brendan_carroll.jpgBrendan Carroll is back from Leipzig and has kindly written us eine kleine Mendelssohn report ...

In it, Brendan vividly describes the wonders of the city in its post-Communism state of reconstruction - physical, in the case of the rebuilt opera house and concert hall, and the re-opening, after years of neglect, of Mendelssohn's former residence; and cultural, as the atmosphere of the ancient university city returns.

Brendan reviews a number ofÌýconcerts at the Mendelssohn Festival, not least the poignant final performance by the Beaux Arts Trio and its veteran,Ìý 86-year-old pianist, Menahem Pressler.ÌýÌý

An interesting report, however it is factually inaccurate as both the concert hall and the opera house were built during the communist administration and not after 1991. The huge socialist-realist fresco in the Gewandhaus foyer is something of a giveaway ...

The Gewandhaus building was opened in 1981. It was the first and only newly built concert hall of the GDR. The opera house (1956-60) was the first rebuilt theatre of the GDR. Its auditorium has recently been refurbished.
