in Glasgow was shaken down and some by American Rock outfit Alabama Shakes on Wednesday night (9 May 2012)...
You may have caught them on Jools Holland of late...and both Ricky Ross and I have been playing tracks from their album 'Boys & Girls' on Another Country and All Night Long in the past few weeks...
Led by the gutsy vocals and rhythm guitar playing skills of Brittany Howard who multi tasks with such ease yet strums her guitar with a violent vigor. Her on stage demeanor matches up to the guitar legends of yesteryear, Hendrix certainly comes to mind when watching her do her 'thang' on stage.
So yes, there's no messing with this lady, quite a performer and a maturity beyond her 23 years when you fully decifer her songwriting talents; which are deep, soulful and mixed with a very 'real' approach. Keeping in line with the forefathers of US Southern Rock bands but this energized quartet do fuse their own brand of originality in amongst it all.
And as my friend Andy pointed out (a native New Yorker and no stranger to the Deep South of America himself) her vocal style leans towards Big Mama Thornton, Janis Joplin and Mavis Staples alongside her own style...it works well, very well.
Oh a special mention and big up to bassist Zac Cockrell, he was tight on his bass guitar!
So a mix of songs from their current debut album 'Boys & Girls' (of which 'Hold On' is making the Ö÷²¥´óÐã Radio Scotland Playlist)...and as a live act they are on cue...a powerful spirit to their live play which strikes you not only in the flesh but also when you spin their album on cd or on the mp3's...
With influences of old skool blues, soul, funk riffs and rhythms this band brought familiar and unique chords to Glasgow, all delivered in epic style for a great show.... Alabama Shakes well and truly blessed the stage at King Tut's. xpect to hear more of the Alabama Shakes on All Night Long with Ravi Sagoo in the coming weeks and months.
