I'm a bit confused though about why Stephen's back in school if he was just offered a university place. As far as I know you can only get those when you've already got A-Levels.

Because this is the same school year, Stephen's yet to get his A Levels. However, as he's a clever thing, he was offered an 'unconditional' acceptance into Oxford meaning his grades didn't matter... sadly though, due to his violence he was kicked out the school and had that offer taken away from him. He now needs to get good grades to get into Oxford.
So, this is why he's started at Deaconsfield - in an attempt to get the A Levels he needs to be accepted in Oxford. Only time will tell if he can keep his head down though…
