DRY THE RIVER band

In the small hours of a Monday morning from 2-3am you can hear a selection of my favourite new tunes compiled into an hour-long mixtape of nonstop music. All the audio is sourced from the 主播大秀 Introducing Uploader - some of it recommended by 主播大秀 colleagues across the Introducing network, and some discovered via Twitter and my own Fresh On The Net blog.

From 3am each Monday the latest mixtape is then available free via the 6 Music Downloads Page - where you'll also find archived episodes from the previous 4 weeks. All the tracklists and timings are published here together with brief information about each artist and a link to their website.

Below are are the listings for Monday, April 30th. The mixtape kicks off with one of the hottest indie tracks of the moment by a London band who these days hardly need any introduction. But then both 主播大秀 Introducing and 6 Music have supported DRY THE RIVER (above) since their earliest days - and we see no reason to stop now that they're finally getting the acclaim they deserve... download and enjoy!

DRY THE RIVER - New Ceremony (Radio Edit) - Starts 0:13

Current single - taken from their album SHALLOW BED - and released on limited edition gatefold 7鈥 vinyl with b-side Deadheads to coincide with record Store Day. The brainchild of songwriter Peter Liddle, DRY THE RIVER were electrifying live when I saw them at In The City 2010. They play a major headline tour in October taking in Cambridge, Portsmouth, Gloucester, Wrexham, Liverpool, Preston, York, Sheffield, Stoke, Birmingham and Bath. It culminates with a London show at Shepherd鈥檚 Bush Empire on November 1st.

HALFLIGHT - Echo - Starts 4:09

"We like melody, spooky noises and the odd trumpet" say Chris Cookson, Joe Rickerby and drummer Ben Davies. Possibly Mike & David also say this: their Facebook is a bit hazy about who's in the band. Echo is their new single from them - due to be officially launched in London a week on Tuesday (May 8th) at Notting Hill Arts Club. "We have lots more London gigs coming up this Summer - including a residency at Ronnie Scotts through June, July and August plus shows at The Half Moon, Barfly and The Social" they tell us.

THE WORDS - Head Over Heels - Starts 7:53

Manchester's THE WORDS came recommended by a listener as playing absolutely storming live shows. This track will be the final single from their debut album TRUTH & FAITH and released on June 25th. They have a close relationship with their fan community who've been helping design the artwork and work out a marketing strategy for the new record. Meanwhile they'll be touring Austria at the start of May and are actively looking for festival dates in the UK and Europe for the rest of the year.

SOPHIE JAMIESON - The Harbour Wall - Starts 10:23

Recommended to us by Ruth Barnes from The Other Woman Music, SOPHIE JAMIESON is a singer-songwriter who's just about to graduate in art history at Cambridge but plans, she tells us "to be running around London with a guitar from July into the foreseeable future!" Ruth herself was tipped off about Sophie's music by the guitarist and songwriter who hosts the acoustic nights in Watford. She plays Cambridge shows later today (Mon 30 April) and then a week on Wednesday (May 9th). See her Facebook for more details

GRINNY GRANDAD - The Good Girl - Starts 13:19

I first played GRINNY GRANDAD back in 2007 after which the band became a flavour of the month in 主播大秀 Introducing circles, with support from Annie Mac and Huw Stephens. Based in York, GG masterminded by beatmeister and remixer Chris Morton - who has written music for, among other things, Grang Theft Auto. Having not heard anything from them for a couple of years, Jenny Eelles from 主播大秀 Introducing In York has just sent me this 2011 single - cowritten with Kymberley Kennedy - via the Introducing Uploader. There's no list of upcoming gigs on their Tumblr or Facebook, but it seem they'll be playing the Beatherder Festival this summer.

MODEL STAGGS - Magnetic People - Starts 16:34

Cambridge duo MODEL STAGGS consist of Ash Allerton plays drums and electronic pads and Tom Miller on electric guitar. This is the opening track on their debut EP which is "self-released, self-recorded, self-produced... in fact," they say, "self-everything." You can hear the astoundingly big and sophisticated noise they make live on a recent recording from a recent hometown gig at St Paul's Church, which they've just posted to their Tumblr.

KILLING FIELDS OF ONTARIO - Cloud - Starts 21:36

KILLING FIELDS OF ONTARIO were my studio guests for Fresh On The Net a year ago - and this new single comes out a week today on Monday May 7th with the B side God Or Country. First formed in Leeds in 2008, Tom Brewster, Stuart Kempster, Dave Loffman, Tom Loffman and James Brooks are now spread all over the country, but will be coming together to play Birmingham on Sunday (May 6th), Leeds (May 7th), London (May 16th) and Sheffield (May 25th). More details on their website.

OLD COLOURS - Morning After - Starts 25:04

A recommendation from Marie Lennon at 主播大秀 Introducing in Witshire, OLD COLOURS consists of Zoe Mead and Dan June. It's unusual for a band this good to spring fully-formed from nowhere and it turns out that they emerged from the ashes of the excellent ANCHOR AND THE WOLF. Morning After is one of two tracks available for free download from their Bandcamp and they play London's Proud Galleries next Monday (May 7th) and The Victoria in their native Swindon on May 19th.

ANGUISH SANDWICH - Leave My Brain Alone - 28:01

ANGUISH SANDWICH are another RUTH BARNES favourite, likewise endorsed by Tash House from the 主播大秀 Introducing show in their native Northampton. This is another blink-and-you'll-miss-it lo-fi classic from the warped collective imaginations of Chris East, John Oldham and Cath Maskell. It's the opening song on their four-track BERMUDA TRIANGLE EP - released on 7" vinyl by Oddbox Records a fortnight today (May 14th). In a parallel universe - under the Nom De MySpace of Winston Echo - Chris East also wrote and recorded the antifolk Introducing classic, .

THE DAYDREAM CLUB - Neon Love Song (Part II) -
Starts 29:35

Apologies - on this week's mixtape I accidentally featured the old version of Neon Love Song - the new, upgraded 2012 version can be heard by clicking here.听 THE DAYDREAM CLUB are Adam Pickering and Paula Walker who first met while studying at LIPA in Liverpool before settling in Leicestershire and selfreleasing their debut album 鈥極VERGROWN鈥 in November 2010, with huge support from Dean Jackson's legendary East Midlands Introducing show . Earlier this year the video for their single On The Move Part II took 50 balloons, 30 party poppers, 2 days of thinking backwards - and just one take - to make. This latest single is part of Burberry's Summer 2012 Eyewear ad campaign (other designer glasses are available) and they'll be playing this year's with a full band lineup.

MAVEN FICTION - I Love This Place - Starts 33:23

I Love This Place says MAVEN FICTION - aka Scarborough songwriter Aaron Ward - and I love his music. That's why this track features on a new free 20-track compilation album curated by Snippet and myself for Rash Records. 主播大秀 Volume Three will be made available at no cost whatever from May 14th - the label and artists share our belief that this music deserves a wider audience.
However it's tough out there, and if you'd like to help Aaron finance his next album you can buy a download from him and/or make a donation via the MAVEN FICTION Bandcamp page.

PICTUREBOX - Ruth Bakes A Cake - Starts 36:32

PICTUREBOX are based songwriter Robert Halcrow - who tells us he loves the proposition that songs can be about "anything at all". Charmingly, the band put on TEA & BISCUITS nights at The Annexe in the fine cathedral city of Canterbury - featuring music, tea, cake and colouring-in. Since their second album WILDLIFE came out in May 2011, this gratifyingly prolific outfit have released a further four digital EPs and singles, all of which can be heard on their Bandcamp page.

SUSIE WILKINS - No Answer - Starts 38:30

SUSIE WILKINS started writing at 14 while living in Hong Kong and made her live debut at an open mic night there at age 16. Since returning to live in London she's toured Europe supporting Joe Jackson and last November released her selfproduced debut album ANYWHERE BUT HERE. It features the top-drawer U.S. rhythm section of Sheryl Crow's drummer and Suzanne Vega's bassplayer, and was mixed by Grammy Award winning engineer Ryan Freeland.

LION - Lion Share - Starts 42:37

Lion Share was recommended to us on my Saturday Night Live show last week by Huw Stephens. Based in Tunbridge Wells, songwriter Oliver Patterson originally used the alias LION when uploading this track (the only song he'd written at the time) to 主播大秀 Introducing In Kent. Jacob Rickard duly played it within a week and urged Ollie to write 11 more songs at home and form an actual band. LION is now a 6 piece whose selftitled album came out in February - and they open for KYLA LA GRANGE at Tunbridge Wells Forum on May 24th.

GEORGE MONTAGUE - White Cavalry - Starts 46:02

I got a cheeky tweet from GEORGE MONTAGUE asking me to look at the funny, upbeat and he'd made for this song. Not that he needed to: over 400,000 people (yes, four hundred THOUSAND people) have found and watched it already on sheer word of mouth. His debut album HAVE YOU MET GEORGE is out now and he'll be playing whole thing live in Cirencester on May 25th at an extravaganza billed as George Montague's Brewery Blues Special. But hurry if you plan to buy a ticket, because there are hardly any left.

RUSTS - Just Remember You Are Not Alone - Starts 49:42

"After the umpteenth bailiff letter landed on Scott Russell's doormat, he knew it was time to sell up and move on. The last and hardest belonging to let go was his beloved 1960s Fender amp, which he very reluctantly sold to clear his council tax arrears and gas bill. While rattling around the house on his own, the sense of loss and heartache inspired him to write and record an album under the new moniker RUSTS." That, my friends, is what you get when your band biog is written by poet rather than a PR company. You can buy Scott's excellent album BLENCATHRA from his Bandcamp or - a label he shares with the SUN ELECTRIC BAND.

EMPTY POOLS - Vanderbilt Cup - Starts 54:06

Hailing from Bristol, EMPTY POOLS formed last Summer 2011 their mission was, it says here, to "combine elements of noise rock with teen dream melodies, late 鈥70s CBGB鈥檚 angularity and the jazzy world-pop sophistication of the Thrill Jockey set." Vanderbilt Cup is a free download from their Bandcamp and they play a Mayday show in their hometown at Start The Bus this Tuesday (May 1st). A debut album is expected later this year.
