INTRODUCING MIXTAPE. MONDAY 03/09/2012

Post categories: ,Ìý,Ìý,Ìý

Tom Robinson Tom Robinson | 02:00 UK time, Monday, 3 September 2012

Leika the band
In the small hours of a Monday morning from 2-3am you can hear a selection of my favourite new tunes compiled into an hour-long mixtape of nonstop music. All the audio is sourced from the Ö÷²¥´óÐã Introducing Uploader - some of it recommended by friends and colleagues and some discovered via Twitter and my own Fresh On The Net blog.

From 3am each Monday the latest mixtape is available free via the 6 Music Downloads Page - where you'll also find archived episodes from the previous 4 weeks. All the tracklists and start times for each track are published here - together with a link to each artist's website. These are the listings for Monday, September 3rd.

THE SHALLOWS - Fairly True [starts 0:14]

It is only the shallow who do not judge by appearances. Built over a decade, this is an expression of our survival, preserved in art. It’s our vanity. Our inspiration. Our fears and hopes. Culture lives in our synapses. Lost in our ambition. Reflecting the mindless world leering from the other side of the glass. The necessary doom in the news. We cannot own what is not ours. This is the music you created.

CARA WINTER - Butterfly [starts 4.37]

Cara Winter is a 25 year old piano based singer/songwriter from East Anglia. A shy self-taught pianist who has recently started experimenting with live shows featuring a string quartet.Ìý You can see a beautifully-shot studio performance of this song – complete with the aforementioned string section – right here on Cara’s YouTube channel.

TESSERA SKIES - Soliloquy of an Astronaut [starts 7.52]

The Newcastle three-piece, Tessera Skies, is the eventual result of four years intermittent writing and recording between university studies. Coming from collective backgrounds in speech, sound, science, classical and jazz, they write music to satisfy their love of pop, ambience and the orchestral. The name was inspired by the meaning and interpretation, both artistically and scientifically, of the sky. And it sounded quite nice.

LEIKA - Drops [starts 11.56]

Pictured above are who in July this year were gutted to cancel a much-anticipated gig at London's Dublin Castle due to their drummer having broken his foot. The band are now back in action, with a headline slot at The Bedford in Balham this Thursday Sept 6th. Though based based in London, most of the band are from Sheffield originally and their new track "Drops" - included in this week's mixtape - is their strongest release to date.

KESTON COBBLERS' CLUB - Your Mother [starts 15.06]

Keston Cobblers' Club are Matthew Lowe, Julia Lowe, Tom Sweet, Bethan Ecclestone in Bromley. Based on folklore but filled to the brim with modern kick, their music, videos and design are edgy and fresh with a big twist on traditional. When you "join the club" you are a part of the music and merriment, so stamp your feet until your shoes wear out. We will heel your soles!!

THIRD MAN THEME - Round Pound [starts 19.02]

Third Man Theme are a post-punk / kraut-pop band based in Belfast, focused on energetic noise for sweaty boys and perfumed girls. Over the last year, the band has built a strong live reputation through a series of fierce performances. They have recently played with acts such as LogikParty, Hype Williams, Thread Pulls, TwinKranes, Not Squares and Girls Names.

CHAILO SIM - Dilate [starts 23.22]

Fronted by the ridiculously talented Nayfe Slusjan and based on the westernmost tip of Wales Chailo Sim have already built a considerable rputation with their self-released album 'Replete' gaining accolades from Fleet Foxes and Iron and Wine following live shows together last year. This is a track that was recorded exclusively in session at the Bella Union studios for label boss Simon Raymonde. You may have heard Chailo Sim on Ö÷²¥´óÐã 6 Music Introducing in the past - and you'll certainly hear them again in future.

YEAH AND SHE HAS RED LIPS TOO - I Like It, I Like, I [starts 28.01]

Caz Hellbent and Jez Leather were regularly featured on my old Fresh On The Net shows, and came in as studio guests in their previous duo incarnation as Molloy. They take their new collective name from a David Lynch painting.Ìý The launch party for this single is in Archway, North London on September 22nd at Dusk Till Dawn.

ORLANDO SEALE AND THE SWELL - Dance Little Man [starts 31.34]
We are ten friends playing music that swings wildly from the epic to the intimate, the melancholic to the euphoric: songs of night and the city, the lost and found on the underground, and the club card redeemers seeking salvation in supermarkets. We've had a great last year, gigging all over the place, at festivals here and abroad and at some great London venues: the ICA in London, The Old Vic Tunnels, The Union Chapel, The Tabernacle, Shunt, Favela Chic, 93 Feet East, The Macbeth, The Troubadour, The Slaughtered Lamb and others.

THE FALLOWS - Raining Back Ö÷²¥´óÐã [starts 35.33]

Describing their music as "footstompin Indie/Folk from Coventry" The Fallows were Artists Of The Month on their local Ö÷²¥´óÐã Introducing show in February. Amongst the band is Neal Pointon who is a Ö÷²¥´óÐã Young Folk Awards 2012 Finalist (as fiddle player with Tri) and has held All Britain titles on 4 instruments. They aim to play play acoustic music with a real rock attitude and tell us they are at their best "live & loud".

FATBWOI - The Patient [starts 38.16]

Fatbwoi, a quirky upbeat alternative/acoustic artist from Bletchley presents a unique take on the modern condition. A thang-shakin' zeitgiest surfin' force of nature and supplier of infectious grooves... He writes songs about chicken, zombies, spies, broadband and lasers... all of life's essentials. An experienced live performer, Fatbwoi has been gigging around the country since 2006, always delivering an energetic show and making a lot of friends along the way... for full biog and latest releases see his website.

THE STANDARDS - Drowning When You Found Me [starts 41.09]

The Standards are a London based trio I first saw last Summer playing a blistering set at the Green Man Festival. If you'd told me that a three-piece guitar group would blow me away with an immense, wall of sound cover of ELO's Mr Blue Sky I would have laughed in your face.Ìý But they did, they were brilliant and their debut album A SLIGHT DISTRACTION will be launched in London this Tuesday September 4th at The Boogaloo in North London. From said abum, this is - we believe - their new single.

THE GRAND - Romance Is Dead [starts 45.04]

We released our first self titled Ep in October 2010 on Louder Than Bombs Records and our second Ep titled 'Harbour' December 2011. The lead track of our latest Ep 'Harbour' has also been used in the opening of an episode of Hollyoaks. Romance is Dead is our first single due out on September 22nd. We have been described as 'blokes, beards, chorus' and 'skinny jeans heaven'. We practice in a converted barn in York and all drive biscuit tins. One of us recently got an upgrade.

ALI INGLE - Jekyll and Hyde [starts 48.04]

Ali Ingle is a young songwriter from Liverpool. "I'm not trying to change the world or make a statement" he says. "My music is just the ramblings and inner thoughts of an attention seeking kid who never quite grew up." This track is taken from his debut EP The Man and the Monster and if you would like to check out more tracks from it, follow this link to his Facebook page. The official video for this track was released this Saturday (September 1st)

THE DARLINGTONS - Everything [starts 51.18]

The Darlingtons are four friends from Somerset who've been playing together since secondary school and decided to 'give it a go' as a band during their 'A' level years. Four years down the line, they continue to blend influences from bands such as Interpol, The National and Echo & The Bunnymen with inspiration from their small town surroundings to create their own sound. Their last release ‘Bats’ secured reviews from The Independent and Music Week, and radio plays from 6 Music. Now they return with new single ‘Everything’ and are scheduled to perform at Bestival on the 7th and 8th of September.

THE MAGINOT BAND - Slow Down Sundial [starts 55.24]

The Maginot Band are a 6 piece who, influenced by cold nights and hot fires write their music ("indie organ pop psychedelia" we're told) in a cottage on the northern edge of Arctic Caithnesian Scotland with the help of lassie's sheepdog brother. They release their debut EP Peace and Quiet via When You Awake Records on 10th September. Slow Down Sundial is the first track available from the EP and can be downloaded now from their Bandcamp.
