Cat Bear Tree

In the small hours of a Monday morning from 2-3am you can hear a selection of my favourite new tunes compiled into an hour-long mixtape of nonstop music. All the audio is sourced from the 主播大秀 Introducing Uploader - some of it recommended by friends and colleagues and some discovered via Twitter and my own blog.

From 3am each Monday the latest mixtape is available free via the 6 Music Downloads Page - where you'll also find archived episodes from the previous 4 weeks. All the tracklists and start times for each track are published here - together with a link to each artist's website.

In addition, every Wednesday the mixtape is published on the and added to this page midweek - along with more info about each of the artists. These are the listings for Monday, 21st January 2013

CAT BEAR TREE - Masqueraders [START 0:12]

Deriving their name, they tell us, from a kick-ass cat and a cowardly bear, Cat Bear Tree are a South London-based trio whose sometimes poppy, sometimes punky tunes nod to the likes of Sleater-Kinney, Electrelane and Warpaint. This is the new band project of longstanding friend of the show and recent session guest Zoe Konez (guitar/vocals) - with Claudia Mansaray (bass/vocals) and Sarah Smith (drums/vocals). They are currently gigging across the capital and beyond whilst preparing for the release of their debut EP in early 2013. Catch them next at the The Miller in south London on March 1st.

BYE POLAR BEARS - Lights Go Out [START 04:43]

Last time we featured Bye Polar Bears on the Introducing Mixtape, we pointed out that they have a snazzy-looking website which is, as yet, not fully operational. Sadly, it remains in its formative stages. They do, however, have a presence on soundcloud, where you can hear the rest of their work.

THE ELLO - BAYB [START 08:12]

The Ello are a sister act from Huddersfield. Olivia May (19) and Lila Louise Hutchinson-Ketter (17) come from a musical family and have been singing solo for years. Olivia studied jazz at Leeds College of Music and has gigged across the UK, while Lila has also done bits and bobs by herself and played live on 主播大秀 Radio Leeds. They cite Alt-J, Amy Winehouse, Jamie Woon, En Vouge, Greenday, Bowling for Soup and Extra Curricular as influences.

STAKKA LYRICS - 主播大秀 ( Remulak Remix) [START 10:58]

The versatile Stakka Lyrics is not only a rapper, producer and MC, but also co-hosts a radio show. As well as showcasing the best urban music from the UK and US, the show champions new music from Cambridgeshire, where Stakka lives. Find out what it's all about at rhymepad-radio.co.uk

ALICE JEMIMA - Far From Here [START 13:30]

A 19-year-old from Newton Abbott in Devon, Alice Jemima has already acquired a dedicated following and performed a number of high-profile gigs. Among these, the unveiling of the Olympic Rings at St Pancras International (where she played to the likes of Seb Coe and Boris Johnson). This track is taken from her All The Boyfriends EP, which is available to download from her website.

CLASSIC PLASTIC - Not the End of the Film [START 16:00]

Formed last summer, Classic Plastic are one of many bands from Brighton to appear on the Mixtape. Their next project is to shoot the video for their first single, "Bucket and Spade Escapade", which we played on this very show last year. Currently, the lads are gearing up for a series of live shows around Brighton, London and possibly further afield. They are also putting the finishing touches to their first E.P, which will be out early this year.

EATEN BY MONSTERS - Bedroom Nerves [START 18:53]

Eaten by Monsters is the work of songwriter Tom Hazledine and drummer Andrew Stafford. Reeling from a crippling bout of writer's block, they're currently road-testing new material and will be hitting the studio shortly. This track is from their EP, Scaring the Pets, which can be downloaded (most affordably) from their bandcamp page.

BROUHAHA - Cheap Champagne [START 21:51]

Following a 2012 UK tour,听 2013 will see the release of a new album of original songs combined with the trad. classics that inspire them, a UK tour with American Gaelic singer Kyle Carey, a 10-date tour of the Netherlands and Germany, and dates at many of the UK's finest folk clubs.

THE DIVERS - A Little Better [START 29:13]

LACES - Screens (Feeding Frenzy Mix) [START 36:14]

This track is taken from from Beachcombers, the first EP from Tooting-based ambient-guitar twins Laces, the latest project from Patrick Wanzala-Ryan formerly of Lammo favourites The Swing Movement. Having been dreamed up, written and recorded at the tail-end of last year, the Beachcombers EP will be released on January 25th. Laces will be playing tracks from the EP at The Macbeth in Hoxton on January 27th, with more gig dates to follow. A limited edition vinyl may, but probably won't, surface in 2013.

DE'BORAH - Three Word Phrase [START 40:58]

A 'deep thinker' raised in a music family, De'Borah's love for music and words surfaces in what Double Ivor Novello award-winner Chris Difford calls 'a delicate and perfect writer'.听 In July 2012, she released her second EP entitled 'A Thousand Tongues' produced by Patrick Wood (Emily and The Woods, Ryan Keen). A former Brit School student, the 21 year old South Londoner regularly performs in and around London and is planning another release this year.
