32 Brinkburn Street: I designed the set

32 Brinkburn Street is a new 主播大秀 One daytime drama timed to coincide with the 2011 census. It is set in two time periods, 1931 and 2011, with each episode covering 24 hours.

The drama follows the lives of two generations of one family who live in the same terraced house in Manchester, comparing and contrasting the problems they face and how they deal with them.

This was a wonderful production to work on as a designer.

Initially, the producer, director and I proposed a colour tone to run throughout the entire piece. It was important that the drama would flow when cutting between the two time periods.

The colour palette, and some lovely transitions by the director, Dan Wilson, ensured that the drama felt like one piece rather than two stories merely stitched together.

The street location in Droylsden, Manchester was chosen before I was on board but the main house was found by the director, location manager and myself simply by knocking on doors in that street.

At the very last minute, just when we thought that the house we needed didn't exist and we were unhappily considering various alternatives, we happened across resident Derek's house which had the perfect layout to suit our script.

We were so happy as the entire drama hinged on finding this house!

The street itself is very well preserved; it even still has Victorian street lamps so this made my life a lot easier!

The residents gave us a warm welcome even when we knocked on their door at eight in the morning to ask if we could put up period netting in their window as their house was in shot!

And Derek was amazing; we removed almost all of his belongings, even his bed, so that we could recreate 1931 in his house - we did walk his dog though!

As you can imagine, a lot more of my time went into creating 1931 than it did 2011 as it had to be thoroughly researched first.

My starting point was Manchester library and its archive of photographs of Manchester residents.

There were some really good street scenes and I was able to get a good sense of the time and the people who lived in it.

Another fantastic source particularly for referencing a working class home in this period (it was a little later, 1939) was a .

Most design books representing this era tend to illustrate the current trends of the day which would really only have been relevant to the wealthy (influences which would eventually filter through to the masses but many years later) whereas this book showed how working class people of this time really lived, in a minimalist, practical way.

If you look closely, you'll see objects in practical places gleaned from Bill Brandt's images to give the sets a sense of being lived in.

Walter (Jack Deam), Gracie (Rebecca Callard), Ellie (Eva Pope) and Nick (Joe Dixon) framed by a window

Gracie's handbag is kept on a nail by the cooker where she can see it, scissors and shoe brushes are on a nail by the fire where they can be found easily every day.

The period props were sourced from a few places in Manchester (prop houses, coin collectors etc) but in particular we used a prop house in Lincolnshire which has several floors of props covering several periods.

You travel from the 1920s to the 1960s by simply opening a door. They can supply almost anything from wallpaper to carpet, to washing powder boxes to lollipops.

It's an amazing place to wander around and I could easily have spent all day exploring except that we (me and my production buyer, Ron Pritchard) had one day to travel four hours each way and to choose props for seven weeks of filming!

We had to choose our props wisely in order to keep to our budget and I chose not to use authentic period wallpaper as this is particularly expensive.

Instead I searched around to find modern wallpaper of the correct tone for our piece and which had a flavour of the period - rather than merely being a historical reproduction.

This would then be aged down - a painting term meaning to dirty the walls with dark washes of paint and which can be done lightly or heavily depending on the effect I'm after, ie, the attic set needed to feel like it hadn't been lived in for decades and was subsequently heavily aged down.

The most interesting space to design was the 1931 kitchen set; I inherited the blueprint of the space from Derek's 2011 kitchen but after that point I could take it anywhere.

Ron and I happened across a range that matched Derek's and which our special effects team brought to life with fake coals and gas bars, an item which brought a lovely atmosphere to the set.

By having a fire fuelled this way, we ensure that the size of the flames can be controlled at all times and that the correct safety measures are put in place, such as having fire extinguishers to hand and keeping the gas bottle at a safe distance outside the studio.

Dennis Henshaw (the construction manager) and his team did a wonderful job in bringing my drawings to life and helping to transform Derek's house into Gracie's house.

I was very fortunate to have a fantastic art department supporting me and a wonderful crew to work with making this one of the most enjoyable productions to date!

Andrea Hughes is the production designer on 32 Brinkburn Street.

32 Brinkburn Street begins on Monday, 28 March at 2.15pm on 主播大秀 One and 主播大秀 One HD. For further programme times, please see the upcoming episodes page.

Wonderful programme.Feeling particularly aware of the whole 'history of a house who lived there ,what happened etc 'as leaving my Victorian house after 34 yrs so my family's life here is all mingled with those of the past inhabitants. The attention to details is brilliant and I await the following episodes with baited breath- even though I think I know the macabre secret of the attic! I feel quite nervous about venturing up into mine after this programme!I particularly appreciated the identical billboard announcements about the recession and the reference to prejudice against immigrants-only the nationality has changed.thanks for such refreshing challenging daytime tv. Sue

What a fabulous programme. The attention to detail is amazing. Comparing similar issues from both 1931 and 2011. I agree with Sue and the above comment

'I particularly appreciated the identical billboard announcements about the recession and the reference to prejudice against immigrants-only the nationality has changed.thanks for such refreshing challenging daytime tv. Sue'

My thoughts exactly, I have already watched it twice and I am waiting patiently for the next episodes. The story is fantastic and like all family's we have our secrets and I can't wait to find out what 32 Brinkburn Street is hiding. You should all be very proud of this. Thank you for making daytime TV bearable once more.

I was born in Moston, Manchester in 1941 but have lived in France for several years. My family originated in that area and, because of the intervening war years, the forties and early fifties were no different from the thirties. Consequently, I can identify with the programme, particularly its setting and characters. Everything is so authentic and atmospheric of that period. Congratulations on producing a most enjoyable programme. It is great for day-time viewing, but why is such a fascinating mini series not being shown at peak viewing times?

  • Comment number 4.

32 Brinkburn St is good......BUT Did they have 'Brilliant White' window and surrounds paint in the 1930's? When the scenes dissolve the 'Brilliant White' shines out. I'm sure in the 1930's brown and green would have been more in keeping with poor northern folk?

  • Comment number 5.

What a great drama, absolutely riveting - more of the same please

  • Comment number 6.

Should be on Prime Time TV!!!!

  • Comment number 7.

What can i say other than fantastic, the best thing i have seen on tv in a long time.

  • Comment number 8.

REally wonderful program, the whole family is hooked! deserves a prime time showing though.
On the period detail-excellent only criticism is yes would agree there wouldn't have brilliant white paint and behind the door in the kitchen in episode one was a modern white plastic light switch!
Have decorated my own house entirely in 30s/40s period so was good to get some fresh ideas.

  • Comment number 9.

I just want to congratulate ALL those involved in making this one of the best drama series I have had the pleasure of watching.
It is clever, engaging and very well acted and never has a boring or aching script.
    WELL DONE to you all.

  • Comment number 10.

Excellent programme 主播大秀. Could this be a trial programme I wonder and then you will consider doing another era peak viewing time ? I am interesting in researching family trees so it's a wonderful insight into many homes sharing secrets down through the ages, some families having secrets similiar to this. Can't wait to see where this is going, think I know!! Love the way the two eras blend into one another, a programme so good I look forward to seeing another series ....PLEASE ???
Well done to the producer, cast etc for their obvious hard work making this authentic.

  • Comment number 11.

I am loving this daytime drama. This is what the 主播大秀 does best. Congratulations to all concerned. The links from the past to the present are absorbing. I once lived in a house where 3 generations of my family had lived previously, it is probably now virtually unheard of. I hope the 主播大秀 commission more similar dramas, as this is absolutely top class.

  • Comment number 12.

I have really been enjoying this series. I am fascinated with the 1931 scenes and the connections with the 2011 family. Hope that there will be more of the same. Congratulations to the 主播大秀 - you really are the best at period drama. I will be sorry when it ends tomorrow.

  • Comment number 13.

Have really enjoyed this series its been the best thing for a long time can anyone give me more information of the music used in this please.

  • Comment number 14.

I'm thoroughly enjoying this programme. One thing I picked up on, though - in the first episode there was a coin which clearly showed George VI on a 1931 penny. As George VI didn't become king until 1936 I'm quite surprised this error passed unnoticed.

  • Comment number 15.

    Loving the programme.

  • Comment number 16.

Brilliant short series with good casting. I've thoroughly enjoyed the first four episodes and just one to go now.

  • Comment number 17.

The house in1931 is lit by oil lamps -the doctor treated his patient by oil lamps.
Yet in the opening scene after plastering the wall (by oil lamp) as they leave the attic he turns of the electric light with the switch by the door.

Electric light in the loft but no where else in the house - I dont think so.

  • Comment number 18.

What a wonderful program. I didnt know about it till episode 3 so caught up with it on iplayer. Currently watching episode 4. Its great to watch seeing places i am familiar with. Lived in Droylsden most of my life and both my daughters went to Fairfield High School in the square.

Its a lovely location and doesnt feel like it is in the middle of a busy town

  • Comment number 19.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this programme. I dont watch the bbc much only for doctors and casualty but i must admit this is good. i like the way it twists and turns
I have a vivd imagination so i have imagined every possible ending! Cant wait for the conclusion but I suppose I will have to. congratulations to all involved with it. I often wonder who lived in my house before me so I am not the only one. Well done everyone.

What a fantastic Drama ,came across it on Tuesday when flicking the channels ....now well and Truly Hooked! Deserves prime slot as I think many are missing a very Good story .It is so unique,so cleverly written/produced/Directed just love the way it switches from one era to another and yet it is easy to follow.I find myself waiting for the next day to see more 'flashbacks' Well Done 主播大秀 but its a shame many are missing such great TV its a sure success and will get even a greater following on prime...more please !

  • Comment number 21.

hi... i've loved the programme and can't wait for the final one and it should be on prime time tv. My family live on the settlement and we go to the church there. I did see some of the filming and the show really shows off the settlement. It's incredible that all the houses there are unique and lends themselves to period drama's like Brinkburn St. Great story based on 1 house and family - well done 主播大秀

  • Comment number 22.

I am thoroughly enjoying the series and shall look forward to other time line series as it provides great scope for story telling.
My only criticism would have been a 1930s working class house having a hot and cold tap over the kitchen sink but having now read about the use of the real house rather than just a set it becomes clear why the hot tap had to stay.

  • Comment number 23.

Please can we say this is Fairfield Moravian Settlement and well worth a visit.

  • Comment number 24.

Well written, acted and good attention to detail. refreshing to see such an innovative, well designed drama.

  • Comment number 25.

Firstly, thanks to everyone who's been watching this week and thank you so much for your comments. It really is lovely to hear such positive feedback.
Liontop, you're absolutely right about the white windows; all of my research pointed towards brown window frames in the 1930s in this level of housing. To make this happen, however, would have required a substantial amount of money of which we didn't have and additionally wasn't integral to telling the story. In practical terms, the existing white woodwork would require two coats of paint and then two or three coats of paint to reinstate the white when we鈥檇 finished filming as well as permission from every street resident. If we鈥檇 chosen to paint our hero house alone 鈥 a process we could afford - then this would have jarred visually with the rest of the street.
Sometimes it鈥檚 uncomfortable to make an aesthetic decision that is historically inaccurate but when designing an entire production I have to be mindful of putting the money in the most valuable area for telling the story. For instance, not painting the windows would enable me to have more strong period props such as a horse and cart or a period vehicle on screen: items like this instantly create atmosphere and place the audience in the chosen era far more effectively than the colour of window frames.
I鈥檒l have to look back at the footage Ben Sansum regarding the white plastic light switch as I鈥檓 puzzled; the 1930s kitchen was a set build and was dressed with period light switches only.
Blueridges ,I鈥檝e just spoken to the director (Dan Wilson) about the coin and he鈥檚 wondering if this is a close-up of an old coin shown in 2011 which isn鈥檛 continuity to 1931?
Regarding the lighting in the house Thomas, we decided to use both electric lighting and oil lamps, which, historically, was feasible. If the entire house had been a set build, we would most definitely have made the decision to light the house by oil lamps alone as this is far more atmospheric and evokes a bygone era immediately. As it was, we filmed on the most part in a real house and it would have cost too much to replace all of the electric light fittings with oil. Instead, the lamp shades were replaced with period ones and the light itself dimmed to reflect the different quality of the bulbs back then. Our theory was that the house had electricity but that the family didn鈥檛 have the money to buy electric table lamps and consequently continued to use oil lamps to augment the overhead lighting.
I hope my comments help to explain the processes that are undertaken when designing a production. There are many practical issues to consider such as budget and schedule when filming a show like 鈥32 Brinkburn Street鈥 and we all try our best to create a believable world for our characters. Thanks again to everyone for watching and taking the time to post your comments.

What a thoroughly enjoyable series, I enjoy family sagas anyway but found this one quite gripping. What a refreshing change from all the doctor series, police series, cooking series, I've not even going to mention some series which have gone on far too long and have turned into pure rubbish. Congratulations on an excellent piece of television viewing, please let's have more.

  • Comment number 27.

Me and my mother thought this drama was brilliantly written and directed. It should of been prime time TV so that others could of watched and been thrilled by what we saw. I'd like to know is there a second part to this drama, you have left us hanging in the balance of how it ended. We would like to know what happened to all the characters after that. Well done bbc, please, please can we have more.

  • Comment number 28.

well done 主播大秀 finally a really great daytime drama, ive got to say ive really enjoyed this,i hope this isnt a 1 off because there is so many questions left un answered like what happened to violet because frank seen her photo and had no idea who she was..what happened to sid/frank? did he make it to america? will frank ever find out his dad isnt really is dad..and what will happen now after they have fount the body? i really hope there will be more and not leave it at that.

  • Comment number 29.

I have just looked forward to and throroughly enjoyed the final episode of 32 Brinkburn Street and like other bloggers I feel sssoooooo frustrated to have so many questions left unanswered. Is this a tease to keep viewers wanting more for a future series?

  • Comment number 30.

What a brilliant series this was, well done to the 主播大秀. I love family saga's and this had me sitting on the edge of my seat all the way through. (Lo and behold if anyone dare to knock on my door or I had to answer the phone! You could hear a pin drop) Is there going to be a follow up? Please and please and pretty please I do hope so. How did the family cope living in that house all them years, knowing that there was a body in the coal celler or did they move away? What happened to Violet? Did Gracie eventually go to America in the end? Why did Frank say little Norah died - what does he mean - when she was still young or what? I and many others I guess would love to find out.

  • Comment number 31.

Just finished watching this series on the iPlayer and I loved it! It reminded me of good quality drama on TV that the whole family used to look forward to, and enjoyed so much, many years ago. I really wish there was more like this on the TV today.
The sets were wonderful, the furniture, the clothes, the expressions of the characters etc etc.
Congratulations, a real success!! PLEASE can we have more quality stuff like this?!

  • Comment number 33.

Loved the series...I also have many unanswered questions...not a fan of daytime TV normally...but I would love to see more Drama where this came from.

  • Comment number 34.

I thought this 5 part drama was excellent. I nearly missed it, but luckily I was able to record it and watch it later each day. This should have been televised later in the day, because I think loads of people will have missed out on it. Well done to all concerned in the making of 32 Brinkburn Street, it was brilliant.

  • Comment number 35.

This was a great drama I am sorry it was so short .I would love to know what happened to Violet and Nora .I really enjoyed this programme

  • Comment number 36.

Excellent series with an excellent cast, more please

  • Comment number 37.

This has been one of the most enjoyable series I have watched in years. Addicted to it from watching the first episode, it never once disappointed in content or authenticity. I grew up in Openshaw, just down Ashton Old Road, and have spent many afternoons walking through this area of Droylsden, it's wonderful that the area has been used for such a top class programme. Everyone who was involved in this series deserves credit for it. Can we have more please?

  • Comment number 38.

I absolutely LOVED this drama! I came across it by accident on Tuesday and recorded the remaining programmes. I was surprised it was on daytime TV and would have expected it to have been on prime time. Like so many of the other comments I was left wanting more PLEASE! There were so many unanswered questions so there could be soooo many more episodes. I felt so sorry for Gracie and Sid/Frank - I wonder if Frank knew that Walter wasn't his real father?

Thank you 主播大秀 for a wonderful series, albeit too short!

  • Comment number 39.

I LOVED this show and I am mourning that it's over I still need to know what happens to Cyd in America and Violet; and how things go for Walter and Gracie.. It's just plane cruel.... I hope there is a part 2... I am going back to Canada next month after living in the UK 6 years and hope I won't miss any part 2's.. Please tell me the CBC will get this from the 主播大秀 PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE

  • Comment number 40.

I've mostly had to record this series, in order to watch it later, but have to say well done to everyone involved in the making of 32 Brinkburn Street! Another GREAT daytime drama! I really think that there should be, at least, one more series where we could see how the lives of the 2 families progress afterwards. Also, I'd like to see how the current family react to the discovery of the skeleton & if they'll find out some more secrets because of it!

  • Comment number 41.

Does Frank find out Syd was his father,so much more to be aired, please lets have more of Brinkburn Street. Why was this not on at peak viewing time its brilliant? Thanks

  • Comment number 42.

Why on earth is the 主播大秀 airing this brilliant drama during the day. If I wasn't in a position to record it I would be most put out. These days rarely do I say "Licence money well spent". Thank you.

    AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just finished watching the final episode of this BRILLIANT series and have so many questions!!!!!!!!
Please let there be more of this - WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?????!!!!!!!!
I love it - but please answer all the questions:
What happened to little Norah? Did she die liek Frank said and if so how?
What happened to Sid/Francis? Did he make it America and never get caught/found?
What happened to Violet and her baby? Did she go to America? Why did Frank never know her?
What happened to Gracie? Did she go to America to be with Sid/Francis? Presumably if she did go she returned to bring Frank up in the house?
Was Violet's baby actually Frank and brought up by Gracie and Walter as theirs? Or did Gracie actually have Sid's/Francis' baby and never tell Walter he wasnt the father? What were Ellie's comments all about when she said that Sid/Francis looked so much like her Frank? Had she looked into the family more than she's letting on to ask to keep the photo?
What happened to Ellie and Nick? Did they ever have kids?
What happened to Frank? Did he get over finding the skeleton in the attic? Did he go to the nursing home?
Was there a police Investigation - what happened there?
SO MANY QUESTIONS - PLEASE COMMISSION A SEQUEL!!!

I thought this mini series was absolutely fantastic and was really clever in the way it compared and paralleled the two moments in time. As well as the historical angles, it also had the gripping elements of the various love interests and of course, the spooky secret. Made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck when they broke the wall down at the end and quite literally found the skeleton in the closet. Well done 主播大秀 and all the cast on a really high quality and wonderfully acted production. Hope you will show it again in a prime time slot.

  • Comment number 51.

I have to say i was quite surprised by this. I barely watch TV let alone afternoon dramas, but i followed it over here as Ciaran was in it from Primeval. But I was not expecting to absolutely love the actual show as well. It was brilliantly written, very well done and contained some brilliant acting.

Such a mixed ending as well, with the 1931 era ending in sadness but the modern era ending in happiness. Loved the twist of Frank actually being 'Sid's' son but it was very sad the Grace didn't go with him in the end :). Loved the parallels between the two times they were very well done.

Would loved to see another series of this, however doubtful that may be :). This show gave something to look forward to watching after college this week while revising and i was sad to see it go :).

  • Comment number 52.

Hearty CONGRATULATIONS to all the cast and producers/directors. Absolutely brilliant. There is no excuse in this world why this series cannot be opened up again; so the story that lies behind so many 'items' is born again.
But what do I know - I just pay my licence.
Take a bow all those involved.

  • Comment number 53.

I had to write again as I thoroughly enjoyed this series please there has to be more I am totally with Karen T and the others on this it was left on such a cliff hanger. !!!!!
Andrea if you are reading this please tell us how you chose the music its great. I think you did the right thing with regard to the set and money it would be a shame to miss this drama tell your boss we require more funds for future productions !! Congratulations on such a great series.

  • Comment number 54.

A really fantastic short series that has the potential and scope for further growth and future development and would be a great loss to the 主播大秀 and viewers if not nurtured.
This series during the past week has been a must see for the wife and myself, iether on tv or iplayer due to work, this being unusual as I personaly don't usually watch much tv due to the repedatively shown modern films, drivel and hype which is typicaly shown. Why on earth this series wasn't shown to a larger audience on prime time is beyond me!(Is it a case of the schedulers assuming they know better than the viewers?)
Some very good and moving scenes within the episodes, one of which I felt was the meeting of Sid/Frank with Gracie under the bridge that 2011 Frank junior had just passed over. This love scene was a brilliant piece of acting which even moved me to the point of a wet eye and quiver in the cheek (not very often that happens and I'm glad the wife didn't see)
Credit to all involved in this series and look forward with anticpation to a further series.
    Well done all.

  • Comment number 55.

With regards to a previous post. I think Sid/Frank might have been a little late for the Titanic sailing by nearly twenty years. 15th April 1912.
And I would hope that if further episodes are made this character along with violet would play and be a large part of 2011 Franks future

  • Comment number 56.

I must apologize yes Tony Preston of course titanic was much earlier, was thinking it was early 1930's,got carried away somewhat with the drama.Karen Tomlinson agree whole heartedly with all u said, 主播大秀, take note we need another series pleassssse......

  • Comment number 57.

Apart from thoroughly enjoying the drama in this series it brought back so many memories. Our family doctor had his surgery in the settlement and I walked through the same on the way to school each day. Please let us have more news of these families. What a cliffhanger.

  • Comment number 58.

Fantastic Drama, had me gripped throughout! Please, please 主播大秀 renew this for a second series!

  • Comment number 59.

Absolutley brilliant - whatched it on iplayer. The 主播大秀 have done it again - licence fee is worth every penny when dramas are produced to this standard. No housework done! Do I feel guilty - NO. Family life can be like that over the years. can't it!

  • Comment number 60.

Well done the bbc for 32 Brinkburn street. Please dont leave us there though. Did Sid make it to america. What happened to little Norah How did she die.
Was Frank Violets baby bought up by Gracie and Walter. Did Gracie let Walter think Frank was his.
Far to many answered question. Must have a second series and soon
    Please PLEASE

  • Comment number 61.

Wow, what a good series, but it is such a shame that it was broadcast during the daytime. I recorded each episode so that I didn't miss anything and I wasn't disappointed. The set dressing was really great and very well done for both periods of the story. I hope it gets broadcast again in the evenings when more people will be able to appreciate such a good programme. Well done 主播大秀.

  • Comment number 62.

I absolutely loved this programme, I was born in a house very similar to it in Withington in 1947 and I lived there until I moved to Cheshire when I was 8 years old. The actors were brilliant, the scenery and the clothing which I absolutely loved. I hope they bring it back as a series in the near future.

  • Comment number 63.

We really enjoyed 32 Brinkburn Street and would love to know what happens next and I would have liked to buy a book for my husband, is there one?
Also if some of the props are not authentic so what it was set years ago and they did a wonderful job.

Thanks for making this - I loved this series and would love to see more. I would be interested to know if the series was left with loose ends on purpose to leave room for another series though? if this is the case and another series is not commissioned then this is very annoying for the viewer!

Please do a second series and tell us what happened to them all! I loved the series but feel it hasn't really ended. Also should be on prime time.

    Hello all,

My name's Dan Wilson and I directed 32 Brinkburn Street. I was pointed towards the blog by Andrea our designer who thought, correctly, that I would be delighted to learn how well received the series has been. We all loved making it, and felt a very real affection for the characters and stories, an affection which I believe shows on the screen. And an affection which is reflected by all this feedback from you!

Just a quick point I wanted to make in response to one of your posts about the music. The music was specially composed for the series by a very talented composer called Ty Unwin. The decision to work with Ty was made by the producers and myself after listening to a number of submissions made by an array of composers who pitched for the job. We were looking for music that seemlessly bridged the time gap between 1931 and 2011 while also having a definite individual feel for both periods. Ty's score achieved this perfectly.

Any questions please do not hesitate to ask and I'm sure Andrea will point me back towards them. Many thanks for all your kind words, I'm so touched that you've enjoyed Brinkburn Street as much as we did. And as for a second series...here's hoping!

    Dan x

Thanks for the memories. I was in primary school at Fairfield Road in the late 40s/early 50s and have fond memories of Fairfield Square. I now live in Hampshire and on a recent visit to my home town of Droylsden I took my partner to see the square. We both recognised the street scenes from the series. Even the 1931 kiktchen interior was similar to my grandparents' house in nearby Openshaw. The program was a joy to watch, so real and so entertaining. Once again, many thanks.

I recorded this programme and have just watched the last episode. I stumbled across the fact that it was on by accident and can't believe how good the series was. Please, please do a follow up and make it available on prime time viewing - Sunday evening or during the week. Like everyone else has commented, so many unanswered questions - brilliant programme. Thank you 主播大秀

32 Brinkburn street was absolutely wonderful, attention to detail and great actors made this piece really moving and kept me watching each episode when i came in from work on the iplayer.
The relationship between Gracie and Sid actually brought a tear to my eye when Gracie had to decide to not go with Sid. The actors involved in this subplot made it totally believeable.
This is a beautiful piece of drama that i feel is sad might not be seen by a more mass audience due to its viewing time.
    Thank goodness for Iplayer!

Thank you, 主播大秀, for the brilliant Brinkburn Street! I loved, loved, loved it!!! I watched all 5 episodes last night in one go, and what a fabulous way to spendcan evening! We don't usually watch 主播大秀 (apart from Masterchef), but this did not disappoint at all. It was gripping from start to finish!

I totally agree with Karen Tomlinson's comments - there were lots of loose ends and it was sooooooooooooo disappointing not to have answers!!!

Please can the 主播大秀 make another series? x

Just caught up with this excellent drama via i-player. My only complaint would be why was it hidden away on day time t.v? Wouldn't it be nice to see a return of drama of this quality on prime time. As good as much of the 主播大秀's evening drama is, it was nice to have a good story simply told without all the costly bells and whistles that seem obligatory these days.

    What an excellent programme!
Superb conception, writing, and acting, as well as atmospheric location.
And such well drawn characters that I can't pick my favourite.
Gracie; Strong, resourceful yet needing someone to love.
Old Frank; The link to the past who's glass is always half full.
Walter; The wimp who eventually turned.
Ellie; Desperate for her own child.
Nick; Struggling businessman, husband to Ellie and father to...
Poppy; Fourteen, strong, determined and intelligent.
Elizabeth; You can see where her daughter, Gracie, gets it from!
I'll shut up now because I could go on and on and on.

My only complaint is that it's on for only 5 episodes.
I look forward to more to come. PLEASE!

Better late than never, I'd like to echo what is clearly the view of the great majority of those who've posted messages here - I thought it was wonderful! The lady wife and I would like a chance to see it again, because there was so much period detail and so much slick editing (I mean that in a nice way) that I'm sure we'd get even more out of it the second time around!

Aged 41, I have just watched the whole series on Sky+ with my family. My Partner, My 2 step kids (boy 17, Girl 14) and my own son (boy 8). We were thoroughly captivated by the whole show. All of us in tears at the end. I feel that my generation were the last of the all under one roof families. I remember staying at my gran and grandads, making the fire, waiting for the coal man to deliver.

That whole community/family era has dissapeared. Being of Irish decendancy it also brought back other family memories.

The kids loved it as my partner and I shared the different stories with them. Can you please please release this on DVD so we can buy it and our family can have another fantastic pyjama day.

I don't know how you can make a second series, you could do a spin off though. Fantastic.
