Pembrokeshire-born actor Christian Bale has scooped a Golden Globe nomination for his supporting role in The Fighter.

Bale plays Dicky Ekland in the film, the former boxer turned trainer to younger half brother Mickey Ward (Mark Wahlberg - who has a nod in the best actor category).

Much has been made about the actor's weight loss for the film, but it isn't the first time that Bale has lost weight in dedication to a role; he appeared almost skeletal in 2004 film The Machinist.

British actors also to receive nominations include Colin Firth, for his portrayal as King George VI, and Geoffrey Rush for his supporting role as Lionel Logue in The King's Speech. The film leads the nominations for next year's awards, with nominations in key categories including best film drama.

Dame Judi Dench, Hugh Laurie, Idris Elba, Hayley Atwell and Ian McShane also pick up nods for roles in television productions Return To Cranford, House, Luther and Pillars Of The Earth (both Atwell and McShane) respectively.

The ceremony on 16 January 2011 will be hosted by comedian Ricky Gervais.
