Turner painting of Conwy Castle sells for £325,250

A painting of Conwy Castle by JMW Turner sold at auction in London last night for £325,250.

The painting was sold as part of an Old Masters and 19th Century Paintings, Drawings and Watercolours sale, held in London by .

The pencil and watercolour work, which was sold by a private collector, is based on drawings that the young Turner made in his Hereford Court sketchbook. The sketchbook contains seven drawings of the castle, all from differing angles, and as a result several paintings of the castle were painted.

Earlier this year, a painting by Turner of Flint Castle sold for over £540,000.
