World Cup 2006 Blog

From our reporters in Germany

Counting down to kick-off

paul_atherton.gifIBC, MUNICH - Are there any readers from Peru out there? (!) I only ask because I made my debut on Peruvian radio station last night, and was wondering how I came across.

I got collared by a Grupo RPP reporter as I left the office. He wanted to know all about Wayne Rooney and what the reaction in England was (I’m not sure ‘ecstatic’ even sums it up), whether we were placing too much faith in one player (no - he’s that good) and whether Sven’s reign had been a success (we’ll know in a few weeks’ time).

The interview was done in English, obviously, and he translated as we went along (it has just occurred to be that this could have been some kind of set-up and he was actually ridiculing everything I said…).

This kind of collaboration is very much a part of being at the IBC. The major advantage of being here is the sharing of information between broadcasters. In the last couple of days we've exchanged match footage and training shots with ESPN, TV Azteca (Mexico), ARD (Germany), TF1 (France) and ART (Iran) to name just a few. There are other advantages too - one of our producers made such an impression she ended up with a Italian reporter’s phone number and has been receiving suggestive text messages ever since!

As the clock counts down towards the opening match, the tension around the building is beginning to build. The atmosphere is a bit more fraught and there are a few nervous-looking faces around the building. More than one-and-a-half billion people are expected to watch the opening of the tournament on television – now that’s pressure!

One last thing I wanted to share – the media were invited to a concert on Wednesday night at the Olympic Stadium, (scene of England’s famous 5-1 humiliation of Germany I’m sure I don’t need to remind you). And Placido finished the concert with renditions of You’ll Never Walk Alone, Land Of Hope And Glory and We Are The Champions! IS THIS AN OMEN?!!

They brew their own beer and their "lager" is great. You may get a shock because it is cloudy, but that's the way it's supposed to be. To get to the pub you get the u4 or u5 and get off at Max Webber Platz. Get off the train and go left to the end of the platform, then head up the stairs and you come right outside the pub.

A reader from Peru but living in US. I have my laptop connected to RPP Internet radio all the time. I was not able to hear the interview, but most probably you talked with Efrain Trelles. He said Gerrard may be the man of the World Cup.
RPP is the most known Radio in Peru (a Peruvian Ö÷²¥´óÐã). In Peru, England is a favorite considering its amazing midfield.

Peruvian language does not exist, unless you are refering to Qeshwa, the ancient Inca's language, spread all around South America's west; plus Aymara (shared by Bolivians and north Chileans)and more than 50 something languages from the amazon jungle.

Anyways, the current official language is Spanish. Although those blokes from RPP speak with bad accents (limeño one)and poor grammar, they discriminate native south americans who speak the ancient languages, and their reports are always biased in favor of two football teams from Lima.
Sorta schizophrenic racism, I reckon.

Cheers.

Well, I was reading this opinions thinking how brave is the ignorance. Is better not to say anything when you are not sure of a particular matter. I am a peruvian and I can say that We speak spanish. There is not such a thing as peruvian dialect, neither a poor handling of the grammar or a bad accent. As a matter of fact, many people say thet we speak a clearer spanish because we don't overuse the Z like in Spain do.
And, about RPP, a bet for sure that they try to make fun of the "gringo". I am sorry, thats the peruvian way.

Peru, Peru, Peru, Peru, Peru... Oh yeah, Argentina 5 Peru 0, Brazil out of the cup final, Argentina champions; cold-blooded military dictators using football to support their right-wing American-endorsed regime of murder of left-wing intellectuals in Argentina. Coincidentally, the same in Brazil and Chile at that time - countries which the US could not afford to see follow in the footsteps of Cuba. Thousands of good people, with families, people filled with love... dead... and forgotten! Where are they now? But nevermind all that, there's a world cup going on and we mustn't let reality get in the way of that. Peru for the cup!!!
