World Cup 2006 Blog

From our reporters in Germany

King Carlos

paul_atherton.gifIBC, MUNICH - One of the best things about being at the World Cup (and there are many, many reasons why it鈥檚 great to be here) is celebrity spotting. I know, I should probably be above it. But I鈥檓 not. Yesterday at the USA v Ghana match I met (鈥榮aw鈥 is perhaps more truthful) a true footballing legend. The only man in the world who can pull off a blonde afro 鈥 Carlos Valderrama.

carlos203.jpgFor those who don鈥檛 recognise the name, Carlos Valderrama is probably Colombia鈥檚 greatest ever player. And more importantly, one of the coolest footballers of all-time.

sums him up perfectly: 鈥淥ne of the most formidable powers of Valderrama is his ability to dominate the match playing at walking pace.鈥

They say never meet your heroes, so I decided not to approach him. He looked pretty grumpy, probably fed up with the likes of me blatantly taking photographs of him without his permission (but you don鈥檛 walk round with hair like that if you want to remain incognito).

Anyway, have to dash 鈥 someone鈥檚 just spotted Jairzinho having dinner at the IBC. Where鈥檚 my camera? And, while on the subject, which retired football legends have you guys spotted out and about in Germany?

While attending Angola vs Portugal in Koln, we walked past Platini and FIFA friends. Platini was on the phone but won of his cronies shouted "Go Scotland" as we passed.

A highlight of the day.

I bought the golfer Laura Davies a drink.

Seems that she is a loyal England fan and travels to games to support the team. I wonder if the same could be said for her male counterparts?

Yes, i was at the Ukraine match with Tunisia and on the way out, i noticed a flower fall to the floor. Nothing unusual. But as i peered up i saw none other than Geoffrey Bayldon of Catweazle fame in a tree making a chain of daisies.

I know this may be a daft question, but if Owen is out of the squad why hasn't Sven brought out another striker to replace him - which I believe you are allowed to do with injuries?

considering how exeptionally and cool the British Isles are. the players should be sent on heat/humidity training immediately after their respective last Premier, (etc) games.
England (eg flight to Singapour), building up heat stamina say 30-60 mins day wth gradual increments.
If we wanted to be really clever, also train players in the art of juggling (this has been clinically proven to physically increase the size of proprioceptive/spacial awarness areas of the brain), juggling is employed by professional sports enhancement (injuring) specialists in the USA. (its worth bearing in mind that the Americans are more advanced in certain areas of medicine by a few years.

I was in a bar in Frankfurt and saw Frank Skinner talking to David Hemery. Later that evening I was in a restaurant and two tables away from me there was Ralph Fiennes having dinner with Denzel Washington.
