From our reporters in Germany

On Rooney watch

LONDON - Here's what happened with -- arrived for scan at 1200 BST-ish, stayed for 25 minutes, then left Whalley Range in a fast car, last seen heading "towards the M6".

----- UPDATE: 1730 BST: Rooney is back in hospital in Manchester - to get the results of his scan? He spent the afternoon at the house of his girlfriend's parents in Croxteth, Liverpool. --------

Some say the results are expected this evening - but we've heard other reports saying they might not be out until tomorrow. There is one blog already claiming to ..

Whatever you read, it's one of those news stories where no-one really knows.

"The scanning room is in between the ladies and gents toilets," is the kind of desperate-for-something-to-say detail we've been getting on the wall-to-wall 主播大秀 News 24 coverage.

From early on Wednesday, the hospital was besieged by journalists and photographers - all looking for the definitive snap of him with a 'good news' grin on his face.

It's also probably the reason there is no media conference in Germany today, to prevent anyone asking questions.

The of Rooney's foot apparently took take place under the eyes of Manchester United team doctor Tony Gill and his England counterpart Leif Sward.

The scan showed the fourth metatarsal in 3-D and should allow them to determine if it has healed fully - though Gill may view the results slightly differently to Sward given United's 拢30m investment....

In the event of a disagreement - a Fifa representative will apparently adjudicate. It has also been revealed that FA executive director David Davies is accompanying the little party.

Another of our bloggers, Claire Heald, was at Heathrow Airport today where police were making a show of searching for 'risk supporters' (previously know as hooligans) - by pulling people aside and .

One man they did not stop was England sprinter Darren Campbell, on his way to Germany for a pre-European Championship warm-up, who says Rooney's injury could be a "blessing in disguise".

campbell203.jpg

"The mentality of the players has been lifted so rather than thinking we can only win this with Rooney, the players have looked at themselves and realised they've all got to play their part. Being a sportsman you can see the little things like that. All the signs are good."

On another note, Five Live are running an with Martin O'Neill, speaking for the first time since being rejected for the England manager's job.

O'Neill says he wanted the England job and that he's desperate to get back into club management - you can hear Pat Murphy's full interview at 1900 BST this evening.

Bad news for Crouchbot fans - the striker told Five Live's Mike Ingham he probably won't be doing his robot dance anytime soon as though it's been good for a laugh, things are about to get very serious..

Lastly, Fletch and Ricco have left West London this morning and will be updating you on their merry way as and when. I can report that Fletch was equipped with - headphones and roll-ups. Thanks to all of you who have been suggesting names for their van - we'll pick the winner soon.

I am just wondering - what is the big deal with this dramatic Rooney story? It seems to me like Spanish TV drama, pretty much. He is not the only striker in England who can hit the ball and score goals, right? And if you want so much a young shining star in the squad - watch Theo. The success will come from a great team performance not from Rooney's or whoever only efforts.

WHY are you all so obsessed with Wayne Rooney? We have a fantastic squad and will not lose the World Cup because of Wayne Rooney - I feel sorry for him but personally I think if he comes back into the team it is going to cause more problems for the squad as other, equally excellent, players will be shoved around and moved into unworkable positions.

Give it a rest - the only people who are interested in boring Rooney are the press!

While I agree with you that the drama is a bit over done re: Roonaldo, it has to be said that he is a class apart among the England strikers - SO who could replace him? I think you have to go to Crouch and Owen AND be very prepared to bring Defoe off the bench - VOTE your thought here:

you should always play your best side, and a fit Rooney would create the best side. As for others being shoved into unworkable positions, the entire build up to the world cup in qualifiers included Rooney so the other players know what the score is. If he's fit play him, if not then move on, its that simple. Inger-lund!!

Like most people l hope Rooney is passed fit but aren't we risking a lot, both for his sake and Englands. Wouldn't it have been better for our highly paid manager to have said weeks ago that we couldn't risk waiting on Rooney and opted for Defoe, Johnson or Bent? Even if Rooney is okayed by the doctors today he won't be match fit ( a lot different than physically fit!) Also we have to get through the league matches first, and only then may Rooney be available. If Rooney does get "passed" today and we don't make it to the knockouts what is the point?

I agree with all the above comments. With only 4 strikers, 1 of which is Owen who's not played a full competetive match this year, we are taking a huge risk with Rooney. If we take him, we only have 3 fit strikers, if Owen breaks down we have then only got Crough and the unproven Walcott. Rooney is world class, but a half fit Rooney is not and we should accept that and move on. What we dont want is what Beckham did in the last world cup and who clearly wasnt fit and shirked tackles. If we are to do well, then we need a fully fit and committed squad, who can all play 90 minutes at full pace. If Rooney is fit then great, all the better but we are not a 1 man team.

Why take Rooney, he's more of a liability getting us down to 10 men when things don't go his way. Do we needa striker who didn't strike during our qualifying games!!
Rooney is the Kings New Clothes nothing more nothing less. Leave him behind.

i think with or without rooney england will struggle, just because they managed to beat two very poor teams in the build up doesnt mean they will go all the way, owen has hardly played in the last few months and the jury is out on walcott ? so will crouch and owen be terrorising the defences ? dont think so.

I'm sorry, but if England's hopes rest on only one player, then they will be lucky to escape the early round. It's all very sad. My forecast (with or without Roo) : England 1 - Portugal 1. England 4 - Trinidad and Tobago 1. Sweden 2 - England 0. Has anyone looked carefully at this Swedish team - it's very strong?

A lot of people saying that Sven should have taken Defoe (or any other fit striker) instead of Rooney, and I see the point, it is important to have 4 fit strikers in the squad. Instead of kicking Rooney out though, what about the useless lump Hargreaves? I couldnt beleive it the other day when I saw he has 30 caps! He may be good for Bayern, but he's absolute rubbish in an England shirt and always has been.

If England drew 1 - 1 with Portugal in the group stages I would be very worried...especially because they're not even playing them.

On the Rooney matter, he is the one and only player that England should wait on with an injury like this. He is the only England player who can really change a game when nothing is going Englands way. Fingers crossed!!

I partially agree with the speech of Darren Campbell because Rooney is the most focused player in this world cup so one fit Rooney may create some psychological pressure on the other teams as they will be thinking to make Rooney stop and thus his fellow strikers will get some relief being not the target of the defenders of their against teams. On the other hand, the other players of England side will clearly realize their existence and responsibility in the team and at the field so they can be able to play as a team where every member has some certain responsibility.
