Skinner and Baddiel judge our 3 Lions karaoke

glen_levy.gifBERLIN - Picture the scene: you鈥檙e on a work night out as it鈥檚 a rare chance to catch up with colleagues outside of the hectic office environment. After all, this is the brief period of rest before one of the most hectic weeks in your four-year work cycle. The bar is of an Irish nature, everyone is relaxed and there鈥檚 even the prospect of karaoke with the ominous machine looming large in the corner.

Three of your colleagues 鈥 for argument鈥檚 sake, let鈥檚 call them Alex, Chris and Noel 鈥 make the brave decision to 鈥渟ing鈥 for the benefit of the rest of the room. Their weapon of choice? Popular England terrace anthem Three Lions. Easy. Everyone knows the words to that one. The music starts and the 鈥業t鈥檚 Coming 主播大秀鈥 refrain strikes up. The entire room sings along, briefly believing that 40 years of hurt might just be coming to an end.

And guess who walks in?

There's a wild scream of excitement as, right on cue (and seriously, this isn't made up), the co-writers of the song, Frank Skinner and David Baddiel, stroll into the bar, stand near the stage and observe their work being, er, interpreted for them.

They seemed to enjoy what they witnessed as there were hearty handshakes all round afterwards. It was one of those 鈥榦nly at the World Cup鈥 kind of moments and it鈥檚 about as post-modern as an anecdote surely gets.

And so it got me thinking: what would you suggest as an apt choice of music for any of our team to sing at a karaoke night? Any duets spring to mind or should they go it alone? Your suggestions, as ever, are most welcome.

On a slight tangent, make sure you look out for a behind the scenes World Cup Daily special next week from England鈥檚 quarter-final against Portugal.

You鈥檒l be able to catch up with the team going to Gelsenkirchen and watch how the drama (hopefully) unfolds. And if there鈥檚 any singing on the way home, let鈥檚 hope it鈥檚 in keeping with Messrs. Skinner and Baddiel鈥檚 wishes.

I think I saw Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Theo Walcott singing James's "Sit Down" recently.

John Motson and Mark Lawrenson - a duet to "Something Stupid".

Leonardo could sing "I'm Too Sexy" by Right Said Fred.

Celina Hinchcliffe - "Your Beautiful" by James Blunt.

Jonathan Pearce - "I've Got A Brand New Combine Harvester" by The Wurzels.

Ricco and Fletch - "Drive" by Tracey Chapman or "Can We Fix It" by Bob The Builder.

Gary Lineker, Alan Hansen, Martin O'Neill, Ian Wright and Adrian Chiles - "Believe" by Cher.

Haha , the images that conjures!!

i not one of the biggest fans of football, gut i do watch the world cup and really enjoy it. but i really think the world cup and euro cup would attract even more support if we could enter as 'UNITED KINGDOM' or 'GREAT BRITAIN'. not only would this unify all our country together but i believe we would be unstoppable.!!

Funnily enough, a girl in Berlin posted on some music message board about the WHOLE Match of the Day crew being in her pub, ALL night long, singing karaoke... can we have more details on that? Surely Alan Hansen, Martin O'Neill and Gordon Strachan weren't singing Three Lions, were they? :D

What is it about these stupid referees? Did Chancellor Blatter give Horazio Elizondo pre-match instructions? Why was Figo never sent off for a head-butt but Rooney was for a nudge on the biggest loser on the plant?

No excuses, we should have won.

As always, wes lost to the team who dived most. World Cup, Euros, Champions League - why do we bother??

They all cheat.

Should not be surprised.

I was thinking of proposing The Clash's 'Rudy can't fail' replaced with the words 'Rooney can't fail'. However after tonight's performance I'm not sure if the sentiment holds water anymore (eventhough I think the boy wonder was let down by his manager, his ManU teamate and a weak referee).

Re: Blog number 6

I dunno that "3 Lions" is a pretty catchy anthem. It's amazing what people will sing along to after a few too many shandys!!

Glen, to be honest, I'm not sure what you have contributed to the 主播大秀's World Cup site. Whilst other 主播大秀 employee's have posted informed, witty, eloquently composed pieces offering an entertaining viewpoint, a fascinating insight, that has genuinley been a pleasure to read, all you seemed to have achieved is to endlessly brag about your three-week jolly at the licence-fee payers expense. 主播大秀 Sport have a great collection of writers, you are definitely not one of them.
