Two England efforts for Goal of the Tournament? Surely someone is having a laugh? Fabio Grosso's goal was infinitely superior to Joe Cole's toe-punt!

How was the Top-10 decided? I can't believe that neither of the Italy vs. Germany goals got in the top 10? At least one of those beautiful, arcing shots of Grosso or Del Piero should've pushed that boring Cambiasso one out of the reckoning!

Philipp Lahm. But grinding my teeth I'd have to say Fabio Grosso, both for the first time strike and the context of the match.

Gattuso didnt score against germany, and zidanes goal was very average really especially as it was a late breakaway too.

2 minutes to go in a semi final to stop the game going to penalties against the best penalty takers in the world, no time to take a touch, against the second best keeper in the tournament, what do you do? you come up with the perfect shot, not a hit and hope either a sublime curling pass into the side netting and to cap it all you're a left back.

Joe Cole's goal was the best in the tournament.
Why? All the other players listed are used to scoring great goals, not him. He is used to getting the ball and attempting 20 step overs before giving away possesion. This was a great goal because it was the only time he touched the ball a very minimal TWICE.

I think Maxi Rodriguez's goal for Argentina against Mexico was probably the best in terms of technique and accuracy but Grosso's goal was superbly taken and considering it was in the dying minutes of the match he took it very well.

Timmy Cahill vs Japan. By far the best goal! all the rest can eat dirt.

People seem to appreciate long range shots here the most. To me best goal was Argentinas team effort where Cambiasso finished after Crespo's great pass in match against Croatia.

Rodriguez over Grosso because of the degree of skill needed to hit an inswinging volley on your wrong foot. Sure Grosso had great technique and presence of mind but he had a great assist with the perceptive soft weight of Pirlo's pass.

Best goal of the World Cup? Pirlo's immaculate curler in the final to put Italy ahead near the end of the match.

Maxi Rodriguez, best goal so far-unbelieveable technique,vision and execution.Frings v costa rica is a very close second,superb strike. So many other crackers though,Grossos and Del Pieros against france,Cambiassos against serbia,Lahms against costa rica,Coles against sweden-all great goals worthy of any world cup.

Best goal is yet to come,the tournament is still on.

didnt see cambiasso's, or Cahills. Joes was a corker, and makes up for going out the way we did (a whole other story, dont go there !). however, the two italian goals were superbly worked. heartbreaker ? tell me about it ! but thats football for ya...

Joe Cole's was nowhere near Rodriguez's - it sat up perfectly for him and any professional player could've scored that! The control and technique of Rodriguez was nothing short of incredible! Cambiasso and Grosso the only other contenders...

joe cole's was the best , better thn rodriquez's , cole was much farer out thn rodriquez n the keeper was in the worst postion for his shot however coles , the keeper was in a good positon buh cole's strike was just too good !

I think Maxi's goal against S&B was superb. Even in the next two matches, no better goal will be scored.

So many to choose from but my vote would have to go to Maxi Rodrigues of Argentina for his wonderfull effort against Mexico

But in my own personal top 3 I'd have Cambiasso in there somewhere, probably at Cole's expense.

Can't believe there's even a debate. Cambiasso's goal may be the best goal ever - a lesson to everyone in the way football should be played. It gets better every time I see it.

Even League 2 players can whack it from 30 yards and sometimes get lucky. Cambiasso's goal sets a world class standard all teams should try to emulate but few succeed in doing so.

How come nobody remembers the Tamada's goal agaisnt Brazil? But I'd have to admit that Grosso's was probably the best...curlers beat blasting if you ask me.

I thought Maxi's strike was great, but from what I have read he man himself said it was a fluke...

Joe Cole's goal was very good. But please, don't let misguided patriotism fool anyone into thinking it was the best goal of the tournament.

In terms of team play, the Cambiasso goal against S&M was by far the best goal. But English fans seem to always prefer belters to team goals - perhaps that's why the England team fares so poorly in major championships; we're overly reliant on moments of individual brilliance to compensate for the lack of good team play.

If you're looking for good individual goals, the Maxi Rodriguez goal beats the Cole goal anyway. I think you have to take into account the context. Two tired teams at 1-1 in extra time. Whereas the Cole goal occurred in a dead-rubber game with England already qualified for the next round.

Cambiasso's goal for the sheer patience. Few teams in the world cup have managed to retain possession for any great length of time. This was a masterclass in team play.
