The Clintons enjoying Tignes in France. Pic: Leigh Mytton

Surfers in the Snow 4

Catch up with Newquay's Lewis and Jack Clinton. The brothers are well known for their surfing skills, but how well will they translate when it comes to snowboarding. The Clintons are keeping a diary about their French escapades. Read entry four.

Day Four - by Jack Clinton

Wow! What a day. Lewis was ill again this morning, so we dosed him up with medicine then headed up the hill to make the most of a blue sky day. Up until now, it's been tipping down with snow, so today was the first time we got to enjoy Tignes in its full glory.

The view was amazing. Absolutely breathtaking - it didn't look real. I went out with Leigh and we started gently with a blue run. Too many flat bits for my liking, so I persuaded Leigh to take me down my first red route. It was super-steep in places, but it was wide, which made up for it. It meant I could take my time with my turns. The trick is to look across the mountain, not down it - then you don't get freaked out. I loved it, even though my legs did hurt by the end.

We stopped for (another) vin chaud, and then went in search of a cruisy, tree-lined run on the other side of the valley. This wasn't so steep, but it was narrow - so short turns for me. Yet another new skill!

After lunch, we went back for Lewis (he didn't make it to the school disco last night). He had slept solidly for four hours and was feeling human again, so we decided to go out for some jumps. We made a mini-jump, but because it's stopped snowing, the landing was pretty hard. Further investigation up the mountain revealed a ready-made kicker for us to play on, so we focused on nailing that.

We were doing all right, but then a bunch of professionals turned up and started doing flips and spins. They were really sound blokes, but it made us realise just how much we have to learn.

Tonight was the dining room staff's night off, so we headed down to the super-sociable Scotty's Bar next door for a nachos and pizza feast. With another blue sky day forecast tomorrow, it was important to get in a good feed. Can't believe our fantastic holiday is nearly over - it's gone so quickly.
