Band of the Month is three!

Our Band of the Month feature celebrates its third birthday. See who we have featured over the past twelve months...

Over the past three years our Band of the Month slot has featured some great bands like Nizlopi, The Satin Dolls, Beneva and Bridges (who later became The Enemy).

The past year has seen us champion a host of great singers and bands from Coventry and Warwickshire. Jog your memory by taking a look at them below. And remember, if you want to be Band Of The Month, all the details are at the bottom of the page.

Justine

We kicked off the third year of Band of the Month by meeting Justine. Not only is she a fantastic songwriter in her own right, she also runs the hugely successful Golden Cross Acoustic open mic night every Wednesday.

Any Given Day

This Warwickshire trio mix rock 'n' roll of the 50s, the catchy harmonies of the Beatles and the attitude of the Ramones. They were our Band of the Month in December 2005.

Mirror! Mirror!

Angular Nuneaton noisemongers Mirror! Mirror! were our first Band Of The Month of 2006 and they started the year off with a bang.

They bagged prestigious support slots with Klaxons and The Liars and released a 7" single on Speedowax Records.

Jaffa Rose

Nick Dugdale plays the Sax

Warwick University Jazz sextet Jaffa Rose were featured in February. Marshaled by evil dual saxophone playing mastermind Nick Dugdale, they began as a four-piece playing jazz standards, but soon added funk, blues and soul into the mix as they began writing their own songs and gigging around the region.

Recently vocalist Anna Frodsham left the band and a new singer has been added to the Jaffa Rose lineup. Now with a new vocalist they are promising to head in a brand new direction, so make sure you keep your eye on them.

The Rrrrs

The Rrrs
The Rrrs

Storming into the Ö÷²¥´óÐã Coventry & Warwickshire studios like a female-fronted punk rock whirlwind, The Rrrrs were our Band of the Month in March. Led by the irrepressible Sharliza R, the band features guitarist Rowan Gifford who is also in Jaffa Rose and is the first person ever to be in the Band of the Month two months in a row!

After a summer on the festival circuit, the Rrrrs managed to build up a Welsh fanbase landing themselves a gig in the unlikely rock hotspot of Oswestry. Back in Cov the band had Vic McGlynn of Ö÷²¥´óÐã 6Music singing their praises after they played at Warwick Students Union. They also played at two new music nights in Cov - Research and Kapow, and they've got a gig lined up at the Birmingham NIA as part of a scheme called The Give Back Project.

Ten O'Clock Scholars

We spoke to this Stratford funk band in April. The Scholars are regulars at Cox's Yard and earlier this year they got the chance to support Mark E Smith and his legendary band The Fall at Stratford Civic Hall.

Jamson's Nook

In May we met up with Jamson's Nook. Taking their name from Jack Kerouac's seminal novel On The Road, they play a unique brand of groove-laden latin electronic indie funk.

The Nook (as we like to call them) have recently released their latest EP entitled Songs For Kofi, which is their first recording as a four-piece with the inclusion of turntablist Vince.

Lament

Brazilian rhythms, flamenco flourishes and the soulful vocals of Kath Kimber are all encompassed within Lament's sound. We featured them as Band of the Month in June.

Lament

Their live album Unveiled recorded at Hush Recording Studios in Coventry has received airplay around the world in Australia, Japan and the United States.

The Buzzin Flies

The summery pop sounds of the Buzzin Flies provided the perfect soundtrack to July.

Legend has it that the band formed at a bus stop on a rainy night in Cov. They showcased their Beach Boys influenced sound on the six-track EP Here comes the Buzzin Flies.

The Way

Sent here to lead you to rock 'n' roll glory, The Way were our Band of the Month in August. They've been together since 2001 and five years later they've got a large and growing fanbase. Since being Band of the Month The Way have been gigging virtually non-stop, performing in front of crowds at Wolverhampton's Little Civic, Cafe One in Birmingham, The Firebug in Leicester as part of the Oxjam charity fund raising event, The Anker in neighbouring town Nuneaton, Coventry's very own Jailhouse, and many more.

Phil Rothwell

Phil Rothwell
Phil Rothwell

Warwick's Phil Rothwell was under the spolight in September. The softly spoken singer-songwriter writes epic songs in the style of U2 and Coldplay. He also works at Warwick Castle where he gets to dress up as a medieval soldier!

Next year Phil plans to record an EP, keep playing, keep publicising, make lots of contacts, and keep having fun! And he's got a good feeling about 2007...

The So You Claims

This Coventry quartet showcased their bullets of punchy pop in October. The SYC's have had support slots with Art Brut and Misty's Big Adventure and are prepared to travel anywhere in the country to play a gig - as long as it has a nearby train station!
