Local Hero DVD (1983)

A three star rating for a DVD usually indicates that at the very least your favourite movie has been released onto a perfectly adequate DVD, possibly with the odd added bonus. "Local Hero" gets the necessary three stars, but only just. Why? If you've read the review for Universal's "Malice" DVD, you'll have noted their shoddy disregard for spelling cast and crew's names correctly. The same slaphead at Universal has obviously passed this DVD too, depriving poor Denis Lawson of an 'L'. Perhaps it's a compliment, as 'Awson' sounds a bit like awesome.

Thankfully the film transfer has been left in more capable hands. The picture quality is a little soft, but it often impresses, even in the dark scenes set on the beach. This is good going for a transfer that is not anamorphic (a process which carries extra coding to create a more detailed picture on a widescreen TV).

The 2.0 sound mix sticks to the centre speaker for what is a clear and strong mono effort.

A modest picture gallery of passing interest is included on the disc.
