Romancing the Stone DVD (1984)

Writer Kathleen Turner finds the crazy plots of her romantic fiction coming to life as she hooks up with dashing fortune hunter Michael Douglas in this popular adventure comedy. It might not have dated too well, but aficionados of 80s comedies may find this polished up DVD hard to resist, especially as it's part of a two-disc set with the sequel "The Jewel of the Nile".

It's a bit of a shock after years of pan and scan outings on TV to discover that this film was shot in 2.35:1 letterbox format. It's presented that way on DVD in a transfer that's often very clear indeed. Whether it's drab looking corners of New York or a steamy rainforest the picture is sharp and detailed.

The 2.0 surround mix doesn't have much in the way of steering effects between the speakers, but the rears get a few treats like rain, thunder, and a waterfall or two.

Extras? Nah, just the trailer, but the price of the double-disc set and the quality of the transfer may well tempt you.
