The War of the Roses DVD (1989)

If ever there was a film to put you off marriage, "The War of the Roses" is it. No sooner have Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner got hitched than they're getting divorced, super bitchy style. Often darkly amusing this comedy of 80s excess now slips out onto an unremarkable DVD.

There are plenty of scenes in legal offices in this movie, and what dark places they are too. They're ideal breeding places for nasty old grain to spoil your picture, but this DVD transfer keeps it in check for what is often quite a clear and detailed image.

The 2.0 surround mix sticks to the front speakers for most of the running time. Don't expect anything wild to happen in terms of steering effects between the speakers. Mind you, perhaps the on-screen mania is more than enough.

Extra, extra! Come and get your trailer! Yup, there are no more extras apart from a trailer. What Fox should do for a re-release (it's ok, we'll buy that too) is get DeVito, Douglas, and Turner together for a group interview. It could make for interesting viewing and Fox could also put it on the "Romancing the Stone" and "The Jewel of the Nile" DVDs. Clever eh?
