40 Days and 40 Nights DVD (2002)

Surely a real challenge would be to forgo DVD for the 40 Days and 40 Nights that Josh Hartnett attempts to abstain from slap and tickle. Perhaps Universal was trying to abstain from any special features for this DVD release, but it did let a commentary slip through!

TECHNICAL FEATURES

Picture The film's cool tones transfer well to disc, providing a quality look.

Sound A funky 5.1 mix relays the music well with some good rear-mixing. Otherwise, as a dialogue-driven film, there aren't any crazy effects.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Audio Commentary Director Michael Lehmann, screenwriter Rob Perez, and producer Michael London kick off this group commentary by baffling over the four major logos that precede the movie.

The film then opens with camerawork undertaken by Josh Hartnett, no less. As you'll find out, the team didn't expect to have Hartnett on board as an actor, let alone as a cameraman, as he had to commit to the shoot of "Pearl Harbor" for such a long time. The development process of "40 Days and 40 Nights" lasted a lot longer than expected (hence all the logos), so by the time they were ready to shoot, Josh was available.

The one reservation the crew had with taking Josh on was that he was a dramatic actor with little comedic experience. Plus, he decided that he wanted to play his role deadly serious and let the comedy come out that way. The crew did much hand-wringing as a result, but they're happy with the end effect.

There are plenty of interesting observations in this chatty commentary, and they nail down what was shot in San Francisco and in Vancouver, which may be handy if you're tempted to seek out any of backdrops. Well, Josh Hartnett fans might!

Trailer OK, it's not a special feature, but we're just trying to pad this review out a bit.
