Medals Yearbook (Token Publishing). This lists all British medals with photos and descriptions, and features some colonial/Commonwealth medals. A comprehensive yearly guide.
Army Service Records of the First World War by William Spencer (PRO, 2001). An excellent summary of all sources that you will encounter if your relative served in the army during the Great War. Also look at RAF records of the war, by the same author.

Take a trip to your local regimental museum and look at their medal collections. Take along a research book to find out what the medals represent, or the staff may be happy to explain them to you.
