the Manchester Jazz Festival is almost over for another year.. you've
heard the last spontaneous sax solo, thrilled to the final flurry
on the fretboard, and the ivories will be improvised no more.

"You can always rely on Jon Ellis to provide at least three
comedy moments. He came in with some safe melodies at the end,
but in the beginning he really pushed the boundaries of music
& a few lightweights left the gig. But hey, if you can't
take the heat & the comedy, then there you go!"

"It was absolutely incredible. I love the way that they
work from each other, that kind of backwards & forwards
in the music. There was a real sense of spontaneity in what
they were doing, and yet they worked like it was one musician.
It was beautiful, really good." Nothing's disappointed

" but it was also the second part, the Oedipus Complex,
I thought that the visual side of it was absolutely stunning.
It worked so well with the music it was an intregal thing, it
was fantastic. I'd love to see more of that sort of thing, it
was really good. That sort of thing very rarely works, but that
worked absolutely brilliantly." |
Arcadia
@ Bridgewater Hall, Sun 25th July

"I thought it was wonderful, simply wonderful... Arcadia
were playing the free jazz that I love so I was so happy to
hear it, you know the Coltrane and all that. In the second set,
which I particularly liked the penultimate number which was
called Janga which I thought was very good indeed and reminded
me a little bit of Abdullah Ibrahim in its style and I liked
it very much"

"Absolutely brilliant. I'll be coming down during the week
to see the other bands. I'm retired so I can come down and watch
the lot."

I heard all the bands this afternoon, and I really enjoyed
myself. This is the second year that I have enjoyed the Manchester
jazz Festival.... it's a way to let everybody know & appreciate
jazz music, enjoy this kind of music & share emotions.
I think it's very good. I really enjoyed Arcadia because they
were a little bit experimental because I love jazz and want
to learn more."

They just come together and become more experienced, more mature,
very fresh, fantastic, I really enjoyed it聟. I'm seeing
everything that I possibly can. I came here to the Green Room
last night and again the performance was stunning. Totally different,
absolutely stunning."

before. It's not really the sort of music I usually listen
to, but I came because the drummer teaches me drums. I want
to start a rock band one day."

" It was great, it reminded me of the modern Scandanavian
Jazz. Very uplifting, I enjoyed it. Soaring solos but lots
of tonal contrast, I liked it. The jazz festival聟 reflects
the core of elite musicians, there's a whole jazz scene now,
there's a jam every night of the week, there are various different
strands of music being played and I think the jazz festival
is very representative actually."
