Manchester Jazz Festival 2004 - don't miss this
updated 07/07/04
So you don't know the first thing about jazz....

Well don't worry. We've put together a 'dont miss this' list.

mjf schedule
Vox pop: what you said
Jazz in St Ann's Square
There's lots to choose from. So if you don't see anything else, don't miss this:

Sun | Mon | Tue | Wed | Thu | Fri | Sat

Sat 24 July: Green Room
John Ellis/ Robert Dainton
Popular songs ranging from Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart and the theme to the Mr Men are enveloped and deconstructed in musical conversation between two enigmatic and highly individual performers: John Ellis (Cinematic Orchestra/John Squire Band) brings his melodic genius and Rob his colourful, textural and witty drumming to create improvisations with a deep, spiritual intent.

Sun 25 July: Green Room
Steve Berry GroupSteve Berry Group
An evening with a north-west supergroup recently formed by Steve as a development of his core trio. Steve's own compositions - melodic, witty and often taking surprising twists and turns - will be well to the fore in new arrangements for this quintet, but with Andy and Mike also making their individual marks on the music. Expect a tight-knit group sound and high-calibre solos - in fact Steve reckons "it's the best thing I've ever done!"
Mon 26 July: St Ann's Square
Alex Douglas's Saravan
A band with a wide range of musical backgrounds but with jazz as the common denominator, this ensemble swings and grooves with r'n'b-esque versions of jazz tunes, fierce neo-funk, lyrical gospel-style ballads with jazz twists, and some straight-ahead blowing.
Tue 27 July: Bridgewater Hall auditorium
Wynton Marsalis & Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra
Pulitzer Prize-winning trumpeter Wynton Marsalis is one of
the most accomplished jazz artists of his generation, and he conducts the world's most swinging big band. Comprised of 15 of today's finest jazz soloists and ensemble players, his Orchestra has a vast repertoire including Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Thelonious Monk. A completely unmissable performance!
Wed 28 July: Matt & Phred's Jazz Club
Ed Kainyek's Jazz Jam
All welcome to come to this first of two special festival jam sessions led by young, up-and-coming alto saxophonist Ed and his trio.
Thu 29 July: Starbucks
Jim Lowe & Simon Goulding
The Starbucks sessions continue with this subtle, acoustic-based duo performing jazz interpretations of latter-day songs and standards: familiar material stripped down to its bare essentials.
Fri 30 July: Green Room
Julian Arg眉elles Trio
Following in the tradition of so-called 'chordless trios', Julian brings his new Scottish-based trio to Manchester for their first visit. Exploring the freedom gained by the absence piano or guitar, Julian uses the space to create a wide-ranging repertoire of pieces, from soundscapes to straight-ahead, and from Celtic airs to the downright weird!
Sat 31 July: Bridgewater Hall Foyer
Stuart McCallum Quintet
Stuart's recently-formed band draws influences from Indian and Irish folk music, free jazz, funk, hip-hop聟some of the music is freely improvised, some more structured, but all has a strong sense of melody and group interplay.
Sat 31 July: Green Room
Hans Koller Big Band
A very special visit to Manchester for a big band which the Guardian dubbed with "the most expansive, expressive and exciting new jazz orchestral sound to have appeared in this country since the late-lamented Loose Tubes." A rare opportunity to get up close and personal to a huge, modern sound, and a resounding close to this year's festival.

The 9th Manchester Jazz Festival runs from 24th - 31st July.
