New Street LawÌý
Lara Cazalet in New Street Law

New Street Law – second series coming soon to Ö÷²¥´óÐã One

Lara Cazalet plays Annie Quick

Can you tell us about Annie and how she fits into the team?

Ìý

I think Annie is a real necessity in the defence team, I think she's Jack's moral head. She likes to stick to the straight and narrow, and doesn't like to do anything which crosses the line.

Ìý

Jack's so headstrong and he'll do as he wants, but she does make him think. There are a few occasions where she makes Jack compromise but, if he wants to do something, there's really no stopping him.

Ìý

Do you think Annie is jealous of Laura?

Ìý

I think Annie feels that Laura has had it very easy – being brought up with a silver spoon in her mouth. For someone like Annie, who has worked very hard to work her way up, it's very frustrating.

Ìý

To her, Laura's a young girl who doesn't know the meaning of struggling. I think she sees her as a daddy's girl. Laurence Scammell has some oily ways of dealing with things and she can't help tarring her with the same brush.

Ìý

How would you describe Annie's relationship with Charlie and how does it evolve in this series?

Ìý

Charlie is Annie's comic relief in her very loveless marriage; she gets on very well with him. He's light, uncomplicated fun – sweet and caring and he just loves her.

Ìý

I think she really loves him, but she's married! She does care, but doesn't want to hurt people. She cares about what's morally right. She has cheated and she knows there is no excuse.

Ìý

Asking Charlie to leave Tessa is a big ask – especially when she's not sure she actually wants him in the first place. He flatters her ego and gives her the attention she doesn't get at home.

Ìý

She is in her mid-thirties and a real workaholic. I wonder whether her being a workaholic is due to the fact that she doesn't want to go home – she just doesn't love her husband, Chris, any more and he knows it.

Ìý

Do you think Annie's impending divorce changes her outlook?

Ìý

I think that divorcing Chris makes her feel rather liberated. That relationship is rather torturous; there was a lot of guilt, anger and resentment after Chris's accident which paralysed him. She would have left Chris before the accident but then it happened and it held her back.

Ìý

I think that Annie is a lot stronger now than she was in the first series. She has a new sense of freedom. She's now a woman who can do anything she wants.

Ìý

Did you have any feedback from friends in the legal system?

Ìý

I've got three barrister friends who absolutely love it. It's written by a barrister, so all the legal jargon and chambers chat is all true to life. But there have to be a few fixes here and there to make it a drama – it's not real life, after all!
