Episode 3 of 5

Drama following two generations of one family. In 1931, Billy keeps his stranglehold on Walter, while in 2011 Ellie's focus on having a child drives a wedge between her and Nick.

2011: It is Frank's birthday, but Ellie can't give her dad the present she would really like to - a baby. Her single-minded focus on her own child is still making things tense with Nick, who has also just discovered that Poppy is on the pill, and he looks for stress release with his AA sponsor, Lynne, stepping over the mark and making an ill-judged lunge at her. While her husband is out making the clumsy pass at Lynne, Ellie girds herself to ask her dad for money for IVF.

Elsewhere, there are more surprises for David as he pays an ailing Frank a house call, and finds Joy working there. She starts to smell as rat as David's behaviour towards her is decidedly cool. And Poppy is freaked out when she finds a loose brick in the attic.

1931: Elizabeth takes Violet to a backstreet abortionist, but Gracie finds them in the nick of time, furious with her mum for endangering Violet's life. Gracie and Violet have a heart-to-heart, and Gracie promises her daughter she's got a plan to handle the pregnancy, even though she doesn't.

Billy keeps his stranglehold on Walter, with another job lined up as a lookout. A nervous Walter agrees, but bottles it at the last minute, angering Billy even more. Walter's woes don't end there though, as an unsupervised Nora follows a cat to a graveyard, with near-fatal consequences. She's rescued by a heroic Sid, but he'll get no praise off Walter, who threatens to murder him if he doesn't keep his nose out of his business. Gracie, meanwhile, blames Walter for Nora's accident and screams that she wishes she'd never married him.

Later, Sid tells Gracie that he is falling in love with her.
