In the Beechgrove Garden, after all the rain Jim is finally managing to get growing in the main veggie plot. Meanwhile, George and Carole take another look at George's secret, undercover show veg to see how they are faring after their snowy start off.

George and Carole are also setting up a trial to compare growing French beans and sweetcorn. Carole will be growing them in Beechgrove, and George in his allotment in the tropics of Edinburgh. Will 120 miles south make any difference to the success or is it the skill of the gardener?

George also visits Jacqui Ritchie in Edinburgh; Jacqui has a square of approx 8m x 8m where there used to be a vigorous lilac tree. She is now left with a root which she doesn't know how to get out. She would like to have a veg patch instead so her daughter can learn about growing veggies. George grinds out the root using a root grinder and then establishes a set of U-shaped raised veggie beds.

Carole is visiting Alex Reynolds who owns Pretty Ugly Plants - featuring carnivorous plants, particularly sarracenias. Alex is exhibiting at Gardening Scotland for the first time. He would like gardeners to discover that growing carnivorous plants is just as easy as other perennials and what he says is - if you fancy a hardy perennial with marginal tendencies, which eats flies... then these are your plants.
