Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

My professional life exists in a realm somewhere between the areas of arts and culture and Mental health.听

However, recently听my own mental health has taken a downwards spiral and I am struggling to rectify how I am currently feeling, which is tired, overworked and overwhelmed.

Speaking to a friend a few days ago, she reminded me that this feeling is a reoccurring cycle for me, and suggested I need to seriously address this moving forward. In the moment, I denied it because I was not prepared to accept that sleeping for 5 minutes, working for 10, then sleeping for 5听had become normal for me.听听But the reality is I have normalised this, and other destructive habits, which I would challenge if one of the young people I work with presented me with the same habits.

It is difficult to try to balance what writer Emma Gammon calls a multi-hyphenated career, which is a career which consists of several jobs at the same time. And I guess it is not surprising there is an additional level of stress with the pressures of lockdown and all of the things that a pandemic brings.听

After reading a helpful graphic on social media, I was forced to consider that maybe my issue is the result of me having poor boundaries and an inability to say no. I am the person who can be relied on, but who never asks for help when I need it, yes, I am that girl who books things back to back in my diary without thinking about how long it will take to get from A to B, or if I need to schedule a toilet break somewhere in the day.听

Trying to be everything for everyone and cutting essential needs like rest so I can feel better about myself and the fact that I鈥檝e managed to cram more into my day, is no longer serving me.

Imam Jalaluddin Rumi, 13th-century poet said:

鈥淵esterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.鈥

I am not sure about the clever or the wise bit, but I am learning that in order to give to others, I must first give to myself.听
