Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Back in March, my eldest, like so many of her peers had an unexpected move home from uni, and now 4 months later, we鈥檙e starting to make tentative preparations for her to leave once more. Never easy, a proper cocktail of emotions made all the more complicated by the pile of her stuff that has remained untouched in garage since her homecoming. So this week has been a sort of sorting out week.听听Now, after we鈥檇 gone through her things and decided what she鈥檇 be taking back, I thought while I was at it, I might as well start on the rest of the boxes and big blue bags that had been in there untouched for years.听

And you know sometimes when you start a job and wished you hadn鈥檛? So much stuff! The bottom of every box reached feels like a tiny victory. And it鈥檚 at the bottom of just such a box I came across a very welcome and unexpected sight. I don鈥檛 know how he got there but there he was, looking a little bit sorry for himself, my childhood bear, Little Ted.听听听I鈥檇 forgotten all about him, terrible I know, but the guilt quickly subsided as I looked at his wonky hand-stitched smile and pressed him up to my face, he still smelt the same. I checked him over, he seemed to be holding up quite well, all things considered, we鈥檇 both aged of course, me worse than him and we鈥檙e both a little battle worn.听听While I鈥檝e gained motherhood鈥檚 tiger stripe stretch marks since last we met, Ted still has his half an ear from where, many moons ago, I would chew it nervously when I needed reassurance.

The bible says 鈥楲et love and faithfulness never leave you, wear them around your neck, write them on your heart.鈥 Things are lost, misplaced, people leave and move on, chapters end, and it hurts when they do.听听Now we could save ourselves the pain and the scars by not loving them or allowing them to love us in the first place, by staying cooly detached, and not getting involved, keeping it professional, but where鈥檚 the joy in that,听it鈥檚听not really living life to the full, is it?听听The love we feel for those we say goodbye to, never goes missing in action, never gets forgotten at the bottom of a box.

I promised my tatty Ted not to lose him ever again. In fact he鈥檚 with me right now and I鈥檝e also promised not to fix his torn ear, because it reminds us both that despite the pain of goodbye and the sorrow of farewells, the scars we bear show us just how loved we are, and that love and loyalty are always worth it.
