Hello Darkness My Old Friend

Join Mark Stephen and Euan McIlwraith for the latest outdoor activities from Shetland to the Borders, plus the key stories for those who live and work in the countryside.

Does winter make you want to hibernate, or do you head outside to embrace the dark?

Last year Euan visited the Muir of Dinnet national nature reserve to find out how different wildlife adapts during winter.

Euan spends some time outside in the darkness and discusses the benefits it can bring.

At this time of year hedgehogs are beginning to hibernate. Mark finds out more about these intriguing wee creatures and what we can do to help them.

Mark heads for a walk up Bennachie at dusk. What difference does it being nearly dark make to the walking experience?

We are joined live by writer and broadcaster Tom Morton to discuss how this year the long, dark winter in Shetland will be different with socialising indoors limited by Covid restrictions.

Our most recent Scotland Outdoors podcast featured journalist and broadcaster Lesley Riddoch talking to Mark about her latest book Huts, A Place Beyond. In this excerpt she tells Mark all about the fascinating life of William Ferris, a little-known man who had a huge impact.

Last week during our Halloween special we learnt the word ‘galoshan’. This week we are joined live by some guests who can tell us what it means and all about its connection to Greenock.

Euan has another mystery bird, this one is perhaps quite easy to spot, but maybe not to identify its call.

And Mark tells us a tale of hedgehogs.
