Scotland's hillside paths are crumbling due to footfall so should those who use the country's hills and mountains pay for the pleasure?
Munro bagging has become something of a national pursuit here in Scotland.....but it comes at a cost. As thousands of boots march across fragile environments, the vegetation gets worn out, the water gets in, and bits of the mountain get washed away, damaging eco-systems and leaving an ugly scar. To prevent that, you need proper paths....but building them costs money. It’s estimated over 400 kilometres of path is in need of repair. So should the hillwalkers themselves pay for that ?
